Kiera Cass is an American author born in 1981 and best known for The Selection, a young adult series of novels.

Cass, who is of Puerto Rican descent, grew up in South Carolina. Attending Socastee high School, Myrtle Beach, Cass remembers having a passion for the arts. However, she was never sure which she field to pursue.

Her indecision pushed her to try everything from acting to singing and dancing. However, nothing seemed to satisfy her until she actually took a chance on writing, realizing the contentment that storytelling had to offer.

The author’s first book, The Siren, came about in 2007 after Cass became fascinated by a local tragedy. The book was eventually self-published in 2009. The Selection came just three years later.

The graduate of Radford University, who studied History, snagged a deal from HarperTeen in 2012. Kiera Cass describes herself as an awkward child who turned to writing as a means of better expressing her thoughts.

Kiera Cass attracted attention, and not the good kind, in 2012. A One-star rating of the author’s book was posted on Goodreads, a popular reviewing website. Elana Roth, who is Cass’ agent, wasn’t particularly pleased.

In retaliation, she attacked the reviewer on social media with various derogatory statements. Roth and Cass then went ahead to have a public conversation on Twitter about the issue.

The pair actually thought their interaction was private. As such, Cass was a little more scathing about the one-star review than she might have been if she had known the conversation was public. Additionally, the pair made plans to push the negative review down the Goodreads page.

They also spoke about boosting the positive reviews on the website. This attempt at boosting the rankings attracted outcries from everyone from bloggers to publications. Cass and Roth were accused of cyber-bullying.

Cass has written various novellas as complements to the Selection series of novels.

Cass doesn’t have any notable awards to speak of, though she has been nominated for accolades like the Young Reader’s Choice Award, the Louisiana Teen Reader’s Choice and the Iowa High School Book Award, not to mention the Colorado Blue Spruce Award.

In 2016, the film rights to The Selection were purchased by Warner Bros. Names like Denise DiNovi, Pouya Shahbazian, and Katie Lovejoy have been connected to the project.

There were plans to turn the Trilogy into a television series. In fact, the CW Television Network ordered two pilots for the series. However, nothing ever came of the project.

While some people still mention Cass’ name in the same breath as the Goodreads controversy she sparked, the author has garnered a lot of fans over the years who appreciate her work, with some of the best books Kiera Cass has written including the following:

America Singer doesn’t care about the Selection, especially no when it threatens to keep her from Aspen who happens to be a caste below her. The prize of the Selection doesn’t appeal to America, not when life in the palace brings with it the risk of violent rebel attacks.

Of course, America makes all these protests before actually meeting Prince Maxon. When she finally meets him, all her plans fly out the window.

This is a very small book, the kind one can finish during a long train ride. There is very little in the way of substance, though Cass definitely knows how to entertain her readers. The characters are overly melodramatic. The politics make even less sense.

The Elite: The selection has whittled the competition down to six competitors. One of these Elites will win Prince Maxon’s affections. America Singer still doesn’t know what she feels and whether Prince Maxon is the one she wants or if she should give it all up for Aspen.

America needs more time but that is exactly what she doesn’t have.

While the first book in the Selection series is almost reminiscent of the Bachelor and worked to emphasize those themes, its sequels seems to forget the competition in favor of exploring the love triangle at the center of the story.

Kiera Cass doesn't seem to have an upcoming book. Their newest book is A Thousand Heartbeats and was released on November, 29th 2022.
