Wicked Lovely: This is the first installment in the Wicked Lovely book series by Melissa Marr. In this book, the author introduces the reader to one, Aislinn. Aislinn has always been keen on following the rules. Ever since she was young, Asian grandmother has constantly drilled them into her. She knows that it is not only wrong to stare at the invisible faeries but to also speak to them as well. She also knows that it is wrong to attract the attention of the faeries. Faeries come in different sizes and shapes, and she has seen all of them. Aislinn has seen them in their disguise that they normally use to appear as human beings. She even can pick a faerie in the crowd without even struggling. Irrespective of what they do, Aislinn has never been surprised. However, when they start breaking the rules, Aislinn becomes worried.
One of the things that Faeries do not like is steel. Steel not only makes causes them pain, but it also makes them the extremely week. Due to this fact, Aislinn’s safe harbor has always been Seth’s house. Seth is Aislinn’s longtime friend who resides in a converted train car. Aislinn has always believed that if she was going to make it in Seth’s converted house, then she was always going to have peace because the faeries would not be able to follow her there. However, Aislinn notices that something has changed. The faeries are not only creeping closer, but they are also paying more attention to her. Furthermore, they have been gathering in front of Seth’s house. Aislinn becomes really worried when two of the faeries, Donia and Keenan, get close to her and even speak to her directly.
After the two faeries, speak to her, Aislinn senses danger and decides to get away. From time to time, she overhears the fairies asking whether she is the one. Aislinn is more than determined to find out what exactly the faeries want. Since she is all grown up, she will have to break the rules. Apart from Aislinn, Melissa Marr introduces the reader to Keenan. Keenan is referred to as the Summer King while his mother is referred to as the Winter Queen. Keenan’s mother has restricted his powers. Everything begins to get cold and soon the entire kingdom is going to be covered with ice. However, the only individual who can save the kingdom is Keenan. He must be able to find a suitable spouse as soon as possible. Keenan’s spouse will be referred to as the summer queen. Keenan and his spouse are going to have the power of overcoming the effects of the Winter Queen, Kenan’s mother.
However, Keenan faces one challenge; Aislinn does not want to become the summer queen at all. The Winter Queen does all she can to ensure that her son does not attain enough powers to overthrow her. Because Aislinn’s friendship is more than just friendship, becoming the Summer Queen would mean that she would have to give up on their friendship and live an eternity with Keenan. With that said, Melissa Marr has penned down an exceedingly interesting and inventive story, which incorporates the actual quotes from the original faeries books written during the 1800’s. The writer’s ability to keep an exceedingly complicated story with numerous important characters crystal clear to the readers is quite phenomenal. The relationship that Marr creates between Seth and Aislinn is heartwarming, thus making the reader fall in love with these characters from the word go.
Whether you a fan of the faerie stories or not, you may want to try this series. The blending of the faerie world and the real world has been masterfully done. You may end up believing that fairies are all around us.
