Anne Rice, who had a Catholic upbringing but has since denounced Christianity, was most notably influenced by American Charles Dickens and English penmen Ernest Hemingway and William Shakespeare. Rice is an alumna of San Francisco State University wherein she went for her undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Rice pursued political science for her undergraduate studies and received a bachelor’s degree from the said institution. For her master’s degree, Rice pursued English and creative writing.
In the early 1970s, Anne Rice did a fix-up which later on became her debut book titled Interview with the Vampire. Rice’s debut was inspired by the 1936 movie named Dracula’s Daughter. After publishers rejected the said manuscript, Rice got obsessive-compulsive disorder. She chanced upon a literary agent at a writer’s conference who influenced the publication of the manuscript in an impressive book deal.
Anne Rice debuted in the mid-1970s and the debut has since been expounded to form the acclaimed The Vampire Chronicles series that has 12 major works. There are about 185 editions of Rice’s debut book and the first edition was initially published in April 1976, titled Interview with the Vampire; this book is shelved under the fantasy (particularly paranormal sub-genre) and fiction (specifically horror fiction sub-genre) genres.
Louis de Pointe de Lac is the featured protagonist in Anne Rice’s book Interview with the Vampire. Born in the 1700s, Louis is initially a mortal person but his life soon segues into that of a vampire. The watershed moment in Rice’s debut is when Louis feels remorseful for the death of his brother. To escape the tribulations associated with mortals, Louis is made into a vampire by a seductive vampire called Lestat. The ensuing story as Louis finds a sense of belonging in his new vampiric way of life is mesmerizing in this British Fantasy Award-nominated book.

Dickens an American scribbler ?
It’s weird to say, but I am not sure that there is another writer out there who gets less credit that Anne Rice. Don’t get me wrong, she is super famous and wealthy; she probably never has to work another day or write another word in her life if she doesn’t want to.
