Frank Herbert was American novelist of science fiction genre famously known for the book Dune and its sequels. Even though he was famously known for science fiction writing, he was also a photographer, a newspaper journalist, book reviewer, lecturer, short story writer and also an environmental consultant. Herbert was born in Tacoma, Washington on October 8th, 1920 to Frank Patrick Herbert and Eileen Herbert. Due to the low-income family living condition, he ran away from his home to live with uncle and aunt in Salem, Oregon. He joined Salem High School (currently known as North Salem High School) where he graduated the following year. In 1939, the author lied about his age to secure his first job at the Glendale Star. He later returned to Salem in 1940 where he obtained a job with the Oregon Statesman newspaper in a variety of positions including a photographer job.

He worked for the U.S. Navy Seabees for around six months during WWII as a photographer and was later given a medical discharge. In 1940, he married Flora Parkinson; they had a daughter in 1942 but divorced later in 1945. After the Second World War, Herbert joined the University of Washington and met Ann Sturt during a creative writing class. The two married in Seattle on 20th June 1946 and had two sons Bruce Calvin Herbert and Brian Patrick Herbert.

After the death of his wife from cancer, Frank Herbert married Theresa Shackleford in 1985, the same year when he published Chapterhouse: Dune; this would be his final single work. On 11th February 1986, Frank Herbert died (aged 65) of a massive pulmonary embolism while he was recovering from surgery he underwent for pancreatic cancer.

Frank Herbert is famously known for Dune Chronicles series that consists of 5 novels. The series publication began in 1965 and ended in 1985. Other book series include The Pandora Sequence series, ConSentiency Universe.

Frank Herbert was the winner of 1965 Nebula Award and 1966 Hugo Award for the book title Dune, the debut novel in Dune Chronicles series. Hellstrom’s Hive was listed in 1973 Publishers Weekly Starred Review, and the same title was a 2008 pick for Listen Up Editor’s choice.

As women soon start to die, the United Nation gathers scientists from around the world to find a cure. Unfortunately, when O’Neill tries to sneak into Ireland, he is captured and tried for genocide. When the scientists finally find a cure for the aging disease, they spread the knowledge without letting the government gain the upper hand.
