The character of Temperance Brennan was introduced to the literary world in the novel Deja Dead, which was published in 1997. Temperance Brennan is already working a case for the Laboratoire des Sciences Judiciaires et de Medecine Legale in Quebec, a spate of missing person cases, when she is handed the task of helping to identify the dismembered body of a woman which has been found in an old monastery which has become too decomposed for normal identification processes. After her initial examination, Brennan believes there is a serial killer on the loose in the city, but first she must convince the stubborn Detective Claudel she is right before the serial killer can strike again. Unfortunately for Temperance, things start to get too close to home as she begins to close in on the killer. Deja Dead won Kathy Reichs the Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel the year after its publication.
Kathy Reichs followed up Deja Dead with the book Death du Jour in 1999, and then Deadly Decisions in 2000. Fatal Voyage, the fourth book in the Temperance Brennan series, was published in 2001.
In 2002, the fifth book in the Temperance Brennan series, Grave Secrets, was published. It marks a bit of a departure for the series, as Temperance finds herself in Guatemala working on the excavation of mass graves. When two of her colleagues are shot one evening, things start to become more sinister for the forensic anthropologist. She is then asked by a local detective, Bartolome Galiano, to help identify remains found in a septic tank in a seedy part of Guatemala City. A political struggle begins to unfold, which Temperance finds herself in the middle of. Not only must Temperance finish her work on the mass grave site, she must also help work out the mystery of the septic tank remains, all the while juggling her love life in what starts to become a messy and troubling trip to Central America.
Grave Secrets was followed by Bare Bones in 2003, then Monday Mourning in 2004 and Cross Bones in 2005. Break No Bones was the ninth book published in the Temperance Brennan series, and it was published in 2006, followed by the milestone tenth book, Bones to Ashes, published in 2007.
Kathy Reichs has published a new book in the Temperance Brennan series each year, with Devil Bones following on from Bones to Ashes in 2008, then 206 Bones in 2009, Spider Bones (or Mortal Remains) in 2010, Flash and Bones in 2001, Bones are Forever in 2012, Bones of the Lost in 2013, Bones Never Lie in 2014 and Speaking in Bones in 2015.
The Temperance Brennan series of books served as inspiration for the hit TV series Bones, although both series are different canon. The TV version of Temperance Brennan is based more on Kathy Reichs herself than the literary version of Brennan. Kathy Reichs serves as an executive producer for the TV series, and also as a consultant for the forensic science aspects of the show.
Despite the fact that Kathy Reichs had the freedom to explore her other interest especially in Science, and even penned down her book at the age of nine years, she still says she had a very Roman Catholic upbringing. At the age of 19-years, Reichs got married to Paul Reichs, a captain serving in Marine Corps and an attorney as well. Upon completing her high school education, Reichs joined the American University where she studied Anthropology. She later joined the Northwestern University, where she earned a Ph.D., while at the same time raising her three children. While previously she had planned on researching on the Native American teachings and burials, Reichs eventually became exceedingly interested in forensic-anthropology after she was asked to look into a number of cases by some of the local authorities. Eventually, Reichs took a job as a tutor of Forensic Anthropology at the North Carolina University in Charlotte. Before she became a novelist, Kathy Reichs published the Forensic Osteology, an academic reference book specialty in the year 1986.
While she worked as a professor, Kathy Reichs went first to Montreal Canada in the year 1989 to the year 1990 on an Academic-exchange program at the Concordia and McGill Universities. One of the main reasons why Kathy Reichs had to go to Canada was so that she could perfect her French speaking. She also became a certified, French Speaking Forensic Anthropologists. She eventually resided in Montreal, Canada while working as a part-time forensic anthropologist. While working as a forensic anthropologist, Reichs worked for hand in hand with the anthropologists who worked on the dead bodies, which were either in skeletal form or decomposed. Reichs also played a key role in the identification of dead bodies and also in establishing how the death occurred. Reichs used to analyze bullet wounds and stab-wounds as well, together with fracture patterns.
Apart from Montreal, Reichs also served in a similar-capacity at the Medical Examiner’s office in the State of North Carolina. While at serving at this post, the author Reichs worked on more than 80 per cent of the cases which were brought to the office in a single year. Reichs also served as a tutor for the FBI agents at the renowened Quantico, Virginia and Hawaii’s Central Identification Lab.

Best Temperance Brenan Books
Deja Dead: The first installment in the Temperance Brenan book series. The premise begins when a dismembered body of a lady is found deep in the ground on one of the abandoned monasteries in Canada. The body is found to be too decomposed. Thus, a normal autopsy cannot be done on the dead body. Temperance Brennan the director of Quebec Provinces Forensic Anthropology is handed the case. Despite the constant cynicism of Detective Claudel who is the current head of the investigation is convinced that this is the work of a serial killer. With that said, Deja Dead is a brilliantly written book that will keep you entertained throughout.

What Is The Next Book in The Temperance Brennan Series?
There doesn't seem to be an upcoming book in The Temperance Brennan Series. The newest book is Fire and Bones and was released on August, 6th 2024.
Is it just me or does being an anthropological forensic scientist sound absolutely amazing? The author’s descriptions can be a little lengthy at times, but I do generally appreciate that to get some more background as to the science-y side of the story. It’s interesting (and fun!) to learn about these careers that you literally never knew existed. Plus the plots and characters hold up too!
There are some downfalls in the series, such as “Grave Secrets” where Temperance is in Guatemala and her colleagues are murdered … that didn’t seem necessary to me as Temperance’s job is interesting enough without bringing in a tropical country.
I’ve also heard the TV series “Bones” is based on this series? But I don’t think the TV show is anything like the books, much to my delight.
