Diane Chamberlain was born and raised in Plainfield, New Jersey in the United States of America. She grew up loving the world of literature and, in fact, even turned her hand to writing short novels which she herself claims were “terrible”. While that may have dissuaded her from writing for some years, Chamberlain still continued her love of reading throughout high school, where she immersed herself in the work of both Eleanor Hibbert (the Victoria Holt series) and also Sinclair Lewis. It’s fair to say that Hibbert’s romantic stories with a gothic twist have had an influence on Chamberlain’s work as she explores the complex relationships of her characters and is able to build the suspense in a similar fashion.
After high school, Chamberlain attended Glassboro State College in her home state, before eventually moving on to San Diego State University, from where she gained her qualifications in social work, both a bachelor’s degree, and a master’s degree. Chamberlain would not delve straight into the world of writing, instead putting her qualifications to good use working in youth counselling, before moving into the realm of medical social work, which took her to hospitals in San Diego and then Washington DC. However, Chamberlain would settle down in Alexandria, Virginia, where she opened her own practice specialising in psychotherapy for adolescents. However, Chamberlain had to close her practice when she was unable to juggle both her practice and her burgeoning career as an author.
Diane Chamberlain started writing again after her childhood attempts at fiction while she was working in San Diego. She started writing her story, Private Relations, in 1982, and she completed it in 1986. However, that first book was not published until 1989. It tells the story of a group of people living in Jersey Shore, an area Chamberlain knows well, having spent many of her summers of a child there. However, that perseverance paid off for her, as she won the RITA Award for Best Single Title Contemporary Novel.
Private Relations was followed by Lovers and Strangers, and then Secret Livers, which was published in 1991. Diane Chamberlain then wrote her first book which would be the start of a series, Keeper of the Light, which was published in 1992. The second book in the Keeper trilogy would not be released until 2003, which was Kiss River. The trilogy was completed in 2004 with Her Mother’s Shadow, which Diane Chamberlain’s 14th book.
While many of Diane Chamberlain’s books are standalone novels, she has written other series of books outside of the Keeper trilogy, including the Before the Storm books, the Necessary Lies books, and the Pretending to Dance books.
After living in New Jersey, San Diego, Washington DC and Virginia, Diane Chamberlain has now finally settled down in North Carolina, where she lives with partner John.

Diane Chamberlain was born and raised in the city of Plainfield, New Jersey. During the summers, Diane Chamberlain loved to spend her summers in Jersey Shore. While working at her psychotherapy practice, Diane Chamberlain still wrote on the side. Chamberlain’s first novel, Private Relations was published in the year 1989. Upon its release, Private Relations won a Rita Award in the category, Best Single Title. Currently, Diane Chamberlain lives with her partner John Pagliuca, who is a photographer by profession.
