Richard Paul Evans is an American author that unexpectedly became a bestseller when he introduced to readers his story about parenting and the spirit of Christmas.

Born in 1962, Evans was a student of Cottonwood High School. He eventually left the institution, which is located in Cottonwood City, to attend the University of Utah from where he acquired his degree. That was in 1984. Paul always had a creative spirit. That might explain why he went into advertising, climbing the ladder to become an executive.

It was during the more interesting periods of his career in the advertising field that Evans wrote a story about Christmas. However, finding an agent proved to be all but impossible. So the author gave up on taking the traditional publishing route and decided to self-publish. Naming his novella The Christmas Box, Richard Paul Evans reached out to his community to see if anyone would be interested in reading his work.

The Christmas Box was a big hit and Evans decided to go bigger, expanding his reach to a regional level. Evans couldn’t have imagined what would happen next. Within a period of a few months, the author’s first book had made it all the way to the top of the New York Times Bestseller list. And if the traditional publishers hadn’t been interested before, they were interested now, quickly initiating a bidding war that saw the author receive an advance of $4.2 million from Simon & Schuster.

The Christmas Box continued to dominate bestseller lists, both in hardcover and paperback format. Since then, Richard Paul Evans has written several dozen novels, many of them making an appearance on the New York Times bestseller list and making Evans a household name. Evans’ first book, The Christmas Box, was turned into a television movie in 1995. Starring Richard Thomas, Kelsey Mulrooney and Maureen O’Hara, the movie was directed by Marcus Cole.

In 1996, Evans had the pleasure of seeing another of his books, Time Piece, become a Television movie as well, starring James Earl Jones, Naomi Watts and Ellen Burstyn.

Two years later, The Locket also received its Television movie adaptation, starring Vanessa Redgrave. Though, Evans fans will probably be more familiar with A Perfect Day, the Robe Lowe movie that came out in 2003 and which was also based on a Richard Paul Evans novel.
