JaQuavis Coleman is a bestselling American author and YMCMB Book Division Member. He is one half of the ‘Ashley and Jaquavis’ writing team. He has earned numerous accolades over the years, both for his individual work and collaborative efforts with Ashley, his wife.

The couple writes urban fiction that is informed by their experiences as children. JaQuavis’ novels attempt to paint an authentic picture of life on the streets of America. He delves into drug use and sex trafficking, and he believes that people respond positively to his work because his stories come from firsthand experiences.

JaQuavis grew up in Flint, Michigan. His was one of the more dangerous neighborhoods. The author was drawn into the drug trade at a tender age. Ashley, his wife, admired him from afar. She wasn’t the only one. Most of the girls were drawn to JaQuavis because he had money. This made him popular.

But the pair never crossed paths until JaQuavis left a package in her bushes; Ashley returned it to him later on. It did not take the couple long to realize that they were made for each other. In the beginning, they were simply the best of friends. Reading was a passion they both shared and they would often purchase two of the same book so that they could read it at the same time and then discuss it as they went along.

Ashley wasn’t JaQuavis’ girlfriend in the traditional sense. They did not hold hands, exchange flowers or go on romantic dates. But they had a connection that neither teen had ever felt. Wherever JaQuavis went, Ashley was never far.

At 16, they decided to strike out on their own. They found a new apartment and prepared to raise their first child. But the pair lost the baby. Ashley was told by her doctor that she had to stay off her feet for at least a month. With little else to do, the pair was tempted to spend the next four weeks reading.

But then JaQuavis decided to challenge Ashley to a writing competition. When he suggested that they each write a book to see who could do a better job, the author had no idea how competitive Ashley was. He was also quite shocked to find that her writing skills rivaled and even exceeded his own.

He couldn’t put her story down and everyone who read it couldn’t praise it enough. But the author wasn’t sour over the issue. Ashley was just as impressed by his story. They spent the next two weeks writing the manuscript for ‘Dirty Money’.

Once it was ready, they submitted it and then went off to college. At the time, JaQuavis couldn’t see a future beyond the narcotics trade. It wasn’t until multiple publishers, including Carl Weber, reached out to him that everything changed. Ashley flushed all his drugs down the toilet and told him that they were going the legitimate route.

In the years that followed, the couple garnered numerous accolades for their raw and unflinching depiction of life on the streets, eventually becoming one of the country’s most influential authors.
