She studied Art History at Bristol University before finally getting her MA in Modern British Art at the Courtauld Institute. She eventually settled down in Bristol in the UK with her husband and kids. The New York Times and Sunday Times Bestselling author did not always know that she would pursue publishing.
As a child, Gilly MacMillan was an avid reader. She had no particular preferences. The author was more than happy to read any literature she came across regardless of the genre. She also wrote from time to time.
In the beginning, her efforts were restricted to the letters she wrote to her friends. In college, she started writing essays, a task she thoroughly enjoyed. It wasn’t until she reached her twenties that the author started experimenting with fiction.
However, she did not make much in the way of progress. And the few thousand words she would always produce did nothing to encourage her to keep writing. So she indulged her fascination for art. By the time the notion of fiction writing re-entered her life, MacMillan was in her forties.
She was still quite pessimistic about her chances of succeeding as a published author. The rigors of family life had forced MacMillan to bury her love for writing. But finally, her children started school and she did not have a proper job at the time.
So it made all the sense in the world to make an attempt at writing fiction. However, rather than setting out to produce the next great crime fiction novel, the author kept her expectations low. She started by simply challenging herself to write a complete book.
While she wasn’t formally employed at the time, MacMillan knew that a moment was fast approaching when she would have no choice but to go and find real work. As such, she understood that she only had a small window to complete her task.
Her first idea did not pan out. The second one had merit but it required more research than she could afford to do at the time. MacMillan only started to make progress when she settled on the genre of crime fiction.
She realized that it had the versatility she needed to stretch her creativity. She also appreciated the room it gave her to create suspense and great characterization. With the genre chosen, MacMillan began to write.
She had no idea that she would eventually become a full-time bestselling author with books that have been translated into nearly two dozen languages.
