Deanna Raybourn is an American author that writes historical fiction. She was born in 1968 in Fortworth, Texas. A sixth-generation native Texan, she attended the University of Texas.

She grew up in San Antonio. It was also where she met her college sweetheart, marrying him on the same day she graduated. Having majored in English and History in college, she went on to teach the subjects at a high school level.

By the time she signed her book deal with MIRA books, she had spent fourteen years struggling to get her writing career off the ground, receiving numerous rejection letters along the way. Deanna doesn’t know when she decided to become a writer.

As far as she can remember, she was always telling stories. She attributes her passion for writing to her interest in reading. The author was four when she learned to read.

It changed her entire life because she could finally read by herself. At some point, she learned to write, realizing that she could finally put her stories on paper. It did not take her long to conclude that writing was her calling.

By the time she got to college, the author already knew that she wanted to pursue historical fiction. As such, it made all the sense in the world for Deanna to take English and History as majors. She saw this as the only rational route someone with her preferences could take if they wanted to write and publish historical fiction.

Her first novel was written at 23. She was already teaching by this point. During the summer break, she spent seven weeks writing a 120,000-word manuscript. Deanna Raybourn is a fast writer, capable of typing a hundred words a minute.

But she has never replicated the feat she achieved that summer, and she doesn’t want to. The novels she wrote at 23 was horrible and she could tell as much. None the less, it introduced her to the writing process and she became obsessed with starting and completing stories.

Her novels feature quite a bit of romance. However, they are historical mysteries first and foremost. The romance and the mysteries are intertwined so intimately that neither component can survive without the other.

She makes every effort possible to ensure that the mystery doesn’t suffer as a result of the romance. However, she also takes pride in the romance fanatics she has attracted to her mysteries novels by creating intriguing couples with complicated relationship dynamics.

Some people have described Deanna’s romance plots as slow burns. She spends a lot of time creating convincing reasons why her protagonists can’t be together.

Deanna does quite a bit of outlining. The process is necessary but she hates it. She also hates writing synopses. Not only are they hard to pen but she has a tendency to deviate from them.
