The author spent her childhood in Arlington, Texas. She has a younger brother, Jason Stewart. He works in film and television as an editor. Amy Stewart attended Arlington High School. She eventually enrolled at the University of Texas (Austin) from where she graduated with a degree in anthropology.

She also secured a Masters in Communication and Regional Planning from the same university. Before delving into fiction, Stewart was known for her nonfiction works which were inspired by her love for horticulture and nature.

‘From the Ground Up’, her first book, published in 2000, chronicled her experiences as a gardener in Santa Cruz, California. She also explored the origins of the earthworm in ‘The Earth Moved’. The author has made appearances on television shows like ‘Good Morning America’ and ‘CBS Sunday Morning’, not to mention TLC’s ‘Cake Boss’.

She is a renowned public speaker that has delivered lectures at institutions like Harvard and Cornell, and organizations such as Google. While she made her debut in fiction in 2009 after publishing ‘The Last Bookstore in America’, Stewart’s success is primarily imputed to ‘Girl Waits with Gun’, the first novel in the ‘Kopp Sisters’ series.

The books follow the adventures of a female deputy sheriff, one of the first in the country, and her fascinating sisters. Stewart discovered the story while researching ‘The Drunken Botanist’. She came across Henry Kaufman, a man that fell afoul of the law after smuggling tainted gin.

Stewart’s curiosity got the better of her. For no particular reason, she decided that she had to see what had happened to Kaufman and whether he had stumbled into any more misadventures. Her search led her to a 1915 article that spoke of a man with a similar name whose car had collided with a carriage.

This led to a volatile encounter with Constance, Norma, and Fleurette, the three Kopp sisters that had been driving the carriage. Kaufman wasn’t that enthusiastic about paying for the damages. In their efforts to ensure that justice was done, the Kopp sisters became the victims of kidnapping threats.

Their house was also shot at. This torment lasted for a year. Any interest Stewart had in Kaufman faded once she discovered the Kopp sisters. She wasn’t even certain that he was the same Kaufman as the first man.

After doing additional research, Stewart was shocked to find that no one had ever bothered to write about the Kopp sisters, not even in a history book. So she decided to make them the subjects of her novel.

It took extensive research for the author to cobble together significant volumes of information about the sisters. But even then, there were several gaps in her understanding of the lives they lived. She concluded that the only way to fill those gaps was to write a fictional story about them.

Amy Stewart Awards

Stewart won the ‘International Association of Culinary Professionals Food Writing Award’ and the ‘National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship’.

Stewart and her husband manage an independent bookstore in Eureka that is situated in a classic 19th Century Victorian building. Some of the author’s best novels include:

Girl Waits with Gun: Constance Kopp went into hiding with her sisters over a decade ago. She wanted to escape a family secret, and she thought she had succeeded. But then a wealthy man ran their buggy down and everything unraveled.

It began with a dispute over damages. Things escalated and bullets started to fly. Then the local sheriff asked Constance to help him bring the wealthy man to justice and she realized that she had no choice but to confront her past.

Lady Cop Makes Trouble: Constance isn’t like other women. She is taller than most men and marriage doesn’t interest her. If that wasn’t enough, she is now a deputy sheriff, one of the first in the country. She is determined to prove herself, to bring every criminal she encounters to justice. But a conman isn’t playing fair. And if she doesn’t stop him, he will undo everything she has worked so hard to secure.
