Patrick Taylor is a bestselling Irish author, physician, and research worker. Hailing from Bangor, Northern Ireland, Taylor, who was born in 1941 pursued his medical studies in Belfast and Ulster. He remained in Ulster for a time, putting his skills to good use. He also added Obstetrics and Gynaecology training to his resume.

Taylor lived through the first two years of the Troubles before leaving Ireland for Canada with his family. The author continued to build his career in the years that followed, winning several lifetime achievement awards for his work as a medical researcher.

Audiences have spent years consuming his literary works in the scientific arena which include papers (170) and textbooks. That doesn’t include the work he did at the Canadian Obstetrics and Gynaecology Journal as editor in chief.

Patrick Taylor’s creative side was first discovered by his peers in 1991 when he started writing humorous medical columns. The author knew by the time he was nine that wanted to pursue medicine. His father, a physician, was definitely an influence. However, there is also the fact that Taylor was struck with polio around that time.

He spent months in the hospital and he grew to admire the doctors and nurses. But that wasn’t his only passion. Taylor was also drawn to writing and publishing, and he proved his dedication to the craft by producing an essay at the age of 16 that won a prize.

He was still working as a physician in Belfast when he wrote his first short story. After moving to Canada, the author became consumed by his academic writing. The humor column was the only outlet for his creativity at the time.

The people that read the column enjoyed Taylor’s writing. Jack Whyte, a bestselling author and Taylor’s friend, eventually pushed him to abandon short stories and columns in favor of a full-length novel.

Taylor obliged him. The 800-page manuscript he produced soon after was terrible and Taylor admits as much. But he wasn’t ready to abandon his publishing dreams. After writing a book of short stories, Taylor reached out to an editor and asked whether she could turn his columns into a book.

The editor wasn’t convinced that the columns would attract much interest. However, she liked the O’Reilly character around which the columns revolved and she encouraged the author to write a novel with O’Reilly at the center.

Even with the demands of his work at St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, Taylor found the time to write. His first O’Reilly novel (The Apprenticeship of Doctor Laverty) was a failure when it came out in 2004. In 2007, a different publishing house (Forge) took an interest in the book and republished it under a new title (An Irish Country Doctor).

It became a bestseller and it gave the author the push he needed to dedicate his life to writing and publishing.
