Maisey Yates is a bestselling (New York Times and USA Today) author that writes women’s fiction and romance. Unlike many of her colleagues, Maisey did not grow up reading romance. She read novels that had romance.

However, the romance aspects were secondary to the story. And yet, those were the components that Maisey loved the most, and she would sometimes grumble when a novel ended without allowing her to indulge in the relationships of its heroes and heroines. She was also rarely pleased with stories that failed to provide happily-ever-after endings.

Her first introduction to the romance genre was a series of ‘Harlequin Presents’ books. They took her breath away. She couldn’t believe that she had just discovered a genre that was solely focused on the one attribute she enjoyed the most.

By that point in time, the author was already 21-years-old. Two years later, Maisey wrote and sold her first book. That wasn’t her first attempt at writing. Maisey was a natural storyteller that was always writing.

The most exciting moment of first grade for Maisey was the day she learned quotation marks. After understanding that the punctuation marks were necessary to write dialog, the author felt like she was sufficiently armed with the tools she needed to produce more daring stories.

At the time, the girl mostly wrote what she read. Her life was filled with middle-grade adventure stories and fantasy YA. However, while she was always starting stories, she had never completed any of them.

But then the romance genre entered her life at the age of 21 and everything changed. She realized that it was the one genre she was most adequately placed to write. And she did just that.

The book she wrote next was not only the first manuscript she finished but she also successfully sold it to Harlequin. The day Maisey sold the manuscript, she had to register her son for school. She also had to visit the local Target to buy school supplies.

Her husband used every opportunity that came their way to tell everyone they met that his wife had just sold her manuscript to Harlequin. They had a big dinner to celebrate later on. Before selling the manuscript, Maisey was a singer.

But she had no qualms about abandoning the field to focus on her writing. The author tries to maintain a strict schedule. She works from Monday to Friday between eight and five. She has to juggle several projects at a time which is why she goes out of her way to meet every single deadline.

This requires discipline, which Maisey has. She has a set number of words that she always endeavors to write before the day ends. She also finds time to do edits and visit social media. She encourages aspiring authors to write.

Maisey was frustrated by the writing class she took in college because very little writing got done. Most of her classmates were too busy fighting to produce the most beautiful sentence to make much of an effort to tell a story. Maisey knew she was different because she was always putting her stories on paper.
