A former student of the National Cathedral School, Hellmann, who was raised in Washington DC, spent many years in Broadcast News, working for NBC as a film editor and eventually going over to National Public Affairs Center for Television in DC. She worked with the team that covered the Watergate hearings.
After moving to Chicago, she joined a public relations firm before starting her own business (Fischer Hellmann Communications) in the mid-1980s. When the author moved to Chicago, she fell so passionately in love with it that she not only adopted it as her home but also featured it prominently in her novels.
As a child, Hellmann spent a lot of time reading thrillers. But she eventually lost her taste for them because so many of them told the same stories. Her mother changed everything when she threw a mystery novel (‘The Staked Goat’ by Jeremiah Healy) at Hellmann.
This introduction to mystery ignited the author’s passion for the genre. When she finally sat down to write her novel, it came as no surprise that it featured an amateur sleuth who, like Hellmann, worked as a video producer.
Hellmann used her experience in television news editing and video production to bring Ellie Foreman, one of her most popular characters, to life. Hellmann received a lot of praise because of the effort she had injected into the exploration of her heroine’s job at a time where most authors went out of their way to ignore or gloss over the daily routines associated with their protagonists’ careers.
Hellmann has attributed her decision to start writing to O.J. Simpson. She remembers following his murder trial closely. She wasn’t simply fascinated by his crimes but also the figures that surrounded his situation, including a female prosecutor, a witty defense lawyer, and a racist police officer.
Even though the trial was real, the entire O.J. Simpson saga felt like it had leaped out of a Ross Macdonald novel. The trial inspired the author to try her own hand at the writing of mystery novels. Even after she became a published author, Hellmann continued to find inspiration in the events of ordinary life, not just the amusing things she encountered every day but the shows she watched on television and the news stories she came across.
The one thing she has noticed since her publishing career took off is the fact that the writing process never gets any easier. She knows how to write dialog. However, descriptions are a headache for Hellmann and she is very critical of her prose.
But this is why she likes editing her work. In fact, she enjoys it far more than the writing process because it allows her to fix her mistakes.

The ‘Love is Murder Conference’ gave Hellmann multiple Readers Choice Awards. She has also received Shamus, Anthony, and Daphne du Maurier Award nominations.

Easy Innocence: Georgia Davis, a former police officer, has been hired to investigate a man who supposedly killed Sarah Smart. The suspect looks guilty but his sister isn’t convinced, which is why she has hired the private investigator.
It doesn’t take Georgia long to realize that the preppy schoolgirls Sarah associated with have found a way to turn their innocence into financial gain. Clearly, none of the girls expected the Prada merchandise rich businessmen were throwing their way to cost them their lives.
A Bitter Veil: Anna thought she would live happily ever after with Nouri. Their backgrounds were so different. And yet, once she fell for him, the notion of returning to Iran with Nouri did not concern her. The fact that Nouri’s parents were so wealthy made the transition even easier.
Anna never expected the fall of the Shah to change everything. Now, Iran is governed by Ayatollah Khomeini. He has turned the country into an Islamic Republic. The rules have changed in ways Anna couldn’t have predicted.
