She also wrote for publications like ‘Men’s Health’ and ‘American Baby’ before finally landing a position with PEOPLE. She wrote an eclectic mix of articles for the magazine, not only tackling major sporting events like the Super Bowl but also covering murders.
She was fortunate enough to interview popular celebrities like Justin Timberlake and Matthew McConaughey. Though, her favorite pieces were those that allowed her to chronicle the lives of ordinary people in difficult situations that had done amazing things.
Harmel’s career was rewarding. She traveled to interesting places and met the most fascinating people. And yet, the University of Florida graduate had a desire to write fiction that she could not abandon.
In 2002, she took a break from PEOPLE. Harmel moved to Paris and dedicated her time to writing. Two years later, she sold her first novel. In another two years, the book was published. Even though Harmel’s first novel was published so quickly, she couldn’t survive as a full-time author.
In the years that followed the publication of her first novel, Harmel continued to rely on her work as a journalist to make ends meet. Her life took a turn for the worst when the economy crashed in 2008. Her magazine work vanished overnight and, as her struggles intensified, she started to doubt her future as a published author.
She had too many bills and very little money, and she wasn’t convinced that her stories had an audience. Harmel couldn’t understand why anyone would read her books. While she had added a few small successes to her resume, the author’s failures within that same period were so much bigger.
Harmel is thankful that she stuck to her guns during those terrible years. Things eventually got better. The difficult times showed her that writing is in her bones. She doesn’t write simply because she enjoys it. Harmel has a deep-seated need to write. And once the tide turned, she used her experiences to pen stories that resonated with numerous fans around the country.
Before long, the writer found that she could actually make a living as a published author of fiction. Harmel’s decision to write fiction is intertwined with her desire to bring about great change. As a child, Harmel knew that she wanted to do big things.
She was obsessed with John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Junior. Their teachings inspired her. But for the longest time, she was convinced that books had no place in her future. She enjoyed reading. But as far as Harmel was concerned, books could only offer fun. They couldn’t change the world.
Harmel was forced to alter her perception when she read Anne Frank’s diary. She still cites it as the most impactful book she has ever read. It showed the author that books were powerful enough to change the world. This gave Harmel the push she needed to surrender to her passion for reading and writing.
Best Kristin Harmel Books
The author writes novels with intention of inspiring her readers to do more with their lives. Some of Harmel’s best books include:
The Book of Lost Names: The war forced Eva and her father, a Polish Jew to leave Paris. After setting up shop in a small town in the mountains, Eva began her new life as a forger working to give fleeing refugees new identities. She eventually made the decision to keep the real names of children, too young to remember who they were, in a book.
Eva, now a librarian, never thought that she would revisit those memories. But an encounter with a photograph has given her the opportunity to right old wrongs.
The Winemaker’s Wife: Ines was quite optimistic about her relationship with Michel in 1940. But shortly after their wedding, the Germans came. Michel chose to sacrifice his marriage to help the resistance. Ines was afraid for him.
For Celine, the situation was far worse because she was half-Jewish and stories of the fate that awaited her kind at the hands of the Nazis were rife.
Decades later, in 2019, Liv Kent’s eccentric grandmother makes an unannounced appearance in New York. She has a tragic story to tell.
