Sally Rooney is an award-winning Irish author that writes novels and screenplays. She came to fame when she published ‘Conversations with Friends’ in 2017, a novel that became a quick success, both critically and commercially. Rooney was born in 1991 in Castlebar, County Mayo to a Telecom Eireann employee (Her Father) and an Arts Center administrator (Her mother). She was one of three children.

Even though she graduated from Trinity College Dublin after studying English before completing an American Literature degree, Rooney did not enjoy her time in school. Part of her distaste for formal education can be attributed to the fact that she hated her teenage years. The author did not respond well to authority. She doesn’t appreciate systems that force children to accept authority they did not agree to.

Despite all she has done, Rooney is quick to dismiss claims that she is a high achiever. As a child, she wasn’t particularly intelligent. Her home was filled with books and she read as much as she could. But she had no interest in experimenting with literature that had been published before 1920.

Many students would have loved to enroll at Trinity College Dublin but Rooney did not count her achievement as a major victory. Even though the institution was associated with a lot of prestige, it did not permit the author to pursue English and Sociology, which is what she wanted. Instead, she had to make do with English literature. You won’t find her complaining. She believes that studying English literature changed the way she perceives books.

That being said, she has continued to downplay the fact that she went to Trinity College Dublin. She applies the same attitude to the European University Debating Championships, which she won in 2013. She has gone so far as to describe the competition as a simple game that is no more complex than scrabble.

Her success in publishing can be attributed to her achievements as a debating champion. Tracy Bohan, her agent, took an interest in Rooney after coming across an essay she had written about her time as a competitive debater. Rooney’s style fascinated Tracy. She reached out to Rooney and asked the author if she had anything else that Tracy could read.

Rooney submitted a manuscript that Tracy shopped around to the publishers she knew. The manuscript attracted seven bids, placing Rooney on the path to publishing success. ‘Conversations with Friends’, Rooney’s debut novel was a massive hit that turned the author into a publishing sensation.

Rooney has received nominations for Desmond Elliot, Rathbone Folio, and Man Booker Prizes, not to mention an International IMPAC Dublin Literary Awards nomination. She won the Costa Book Award in 2018 and the British Book Award in 2020.
