Gena Showalter is a bestselling American author that writes romance novels. She also remembers reading Johanna Lindsay’s ‘Silver Angel’ and falling for the heroine, a sassy 18-year-old that had the sexiest man in Regency England wrapped around her finger. The author was still in high school when she first attempted to write fiction.

Though, back then, she limited her efforts to a few scenes. It wasn’t until she reached her early twenties that Gena Showalter wrote ‘Heaven’s Fury’, her first full-length novel. But she has no interest in showing it to anyone because it was terrible. Showalter knows this, which is why she is frequently tempted to burn the manuscript.

Fortunately, she was not discouraged by the attempt. She kept writing until she found a publisher that was willing to take a chance on her stories. The author was 27. At the time, she had no idea that she would go on to write dozens of novels over the years, with some of the books becoming New York Times and USA Today bestsellers.

Showalter learned early on that she had to treat her career as a business. She couldn’t wait for inspiration to strike her. She had to make sure that she wrote every single day regardless of whether or not she felt like it.

Admittedly, once she became a published author, she no longer had a choice in the matter. She had deadlines and she understood that failing to meet them meant losing the trust of her publishers.

She uses the same discipline that got her into the publishing industry to meet her objectives. The author tries to write at least one chapter every single day regardless of the circumstances.

The fact that her work isn’t always pristine doesn’t bother Showalter. She knows that her first draft is just the bare bones and that, over time, she will fix and refine it to produce a manuscript worth publishing.

Showalter wants aspiring writers to approach their manuscripts the same way. They should write their first draft for themselves, acting as if no one will ever read it. This will enable them to make steady progress until they finally finish the draft.

The tactic has worked for Showalter. Her books are fascinating because she combines so many interesting ideas, including myths, legends, and folktales. But even when she experiments with fantasy, her books always emphasize the romantic aspects.
