Jack Carr is an American author and former Navy Seal that writes action thrillers. Carr joined the military in 1996. He left two decades later to write fiction. Carr did not wander into the military by accident, and neither was it a coincidence that he eventually became a successful author.

Even as a child, Carr knew that he wanted to do his duty in the Army before finally settling down to become a published author. Carr’s interest in the military can be traced back to his grandfather, a pilot that died in World War 2.

Carr had a close relationship with the memory of his grandfather because he spent his childhood looking at photos of the soldier, not to mention the medals he earned and the flag the army gave Carr’s grandmother when her husband died.

The author was determined to honor his grandfather by enlisting and becoming a sniper. He had no idea that his experience in the Army would give him the foundation he needed to write novels about deadly army veterans fighting to stop injustices. Carr’s military career allowed him to serve in places like Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Northern Arabian Gulf.

Once he was satisfied with his accomplishments, Carr decided to pass the torch to a younger generation while he pursued his writing career. Carr’s friends and family were far from surprised when he revealed his intentions to write fiction for a living.

The author grew up in a home with a mother that worked as a librarian. As such, Carr had plenty of books to read. Because he was obsessed with the Army and special operations, but the internet was not around to feed his interests in the 80s, he had to source his information from fictional novels.

The heroes he encountered in the works of authors like J. C. Pollock and Stephen Hunter influenced Carr significantly by showing him the kind of man he wanted to become. Eventually, he turned his attention to ‘Soldier of Fortune’, a non-fiction magazine that his mother did not approve of, which is why Carr’s father had to sneak him the copies he bought on his way from work.

After filling his head with tales of conflict set in places like Vietnam and Africa, it was only natural for Carr to enlist. And once he left the Military, there was no question in his mind that he would go on to write the stories that had inspired him as a child.

Carr is convinced that his time in the Army has enhanced his writing because the stories he tells are informed by the kinds of emotions that are alien to civilians that have never seen combat.

The writing process isn’t just a source of joy for Carr. It is also therapeutic. It allows him to work through some of the pent-up feelings that accumulated as a result of his time in the Army. He is grateful to figures like Brad Thor that gave him the leg up he needed to succeed as a published author.
