1 | Angels in Our Hearts | 2019 | Description / Buy |
The author was working as a behavioral manager at a school when she decided to do her part to help the many children transitioning through the foster system. Her job is to house and train damaged children.
She follows a behavioral modification program that is designed to rehabilitate the children where possible, either sending them back to their families or allowing them to join the mainstream foster care system.
Casey’s work is not only challenging but highly unpredictable. A typical week may begin with a pleasant conversation with a social worker during which the author won’t hesitate to assure the social worker that things in her home are going well.
But it can take less than two days for things to spin out of control to a point where the police have to intervene. Watson’s charges are volatile. The same child that just won an award from their teacher the night before could just as easily refuse to return to school a few hours later.
The children are wide-ranging, originating from a variety of backgrounds. But Watson has never retreated from the challenge. If anything, she appreciates the fact that the work keeps her young.
She is always running around, yelling at teenagers and picking up after their younger foster siblings.
Keeping the children in check during the holidays isn’t easy because they resent the large gatherings she plans. Watson sees the results of her work in the children that eventually return to visit their foster parents.
Watson’s biological children appreciate the work she does because it has taught them to value the differences they encounter in society. She encourages anyone interested in fostering troubled children to try it because it doesn’t take much to do what she does.
From Watson’s point of view, all you need is a spare bedroom and the patience to listen. The children the author receives are looking for love, safety, and boundaries, and anyone that can provide these elements has a decent chance of winning the hearts of difficult children.
Watson is interesting because her job keeps her busy for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And yet, she finds the time to write. The author does this late in the night when everyone is asleep.
Best Casey Watson Books
Casey Watson, who writes under a pen name, has 2 children and 3 grandchildren. She works with her husband. Watson’s best books include:
Little Prisoners: Olivia (6) and Ashton (9) were a mess when Casey and her family met them, their nails filthy and their heads full of lice. The frightened children were covered in scabs. The authorities had decided that the kids were at risk.
The oldest of five children, their presence in Casey’s home should have been temporary. But the emergency placement became something more. After living in a loving home for months, Ashton and Olivia opened up. What Casey learned about their past shook her.
The Boy No One Loved: Justin tried to burn his family home down after their heroin addict of a mother abandoned them at home, again. He was five. The authorities pulled him into the foster system. It took 20 failed placements before the boy found his way to Casey’s home.
Casey thought she understood troubled children. She had a system that had successfully modified the behavior of several challenging children. But Justin was different.
After being on the receiving end of so much rejection, he had no intention of accepting the love and warmth he received from his foster parents. He wouldn’t stop lashing out at his new family. He spurned every offer of affection that came his way.
But Casey wouldn’t give up. It took a visit to his mother to finally reveal the truth of things. Once Casey learned about the horrors that Justin had suffered in the past, the boy’s underlying problems became clear. Casey could understand the pain that had been inflicted upon Justin and this gave her hope that she could help him.
