Christopher Fowler is a British novelist that writes mystery, thriller, YA fantasy, and horror novels. Born in 1953 in Greenwich, London, Fowler attended Colfes before landing a position as a copywriter at J Walter Thompson.

He created The Creative Partnership at 26. He made a name for himself in film marketing, not only in the UK but abroad. Fowler did everything from making trailers to creating movie posters and producing documentaries.

He has had the pleasure of working with significant figures like Peter Greenaway and Mike Leigh. He also lent his talents to Reservoir Dogs, Moulin Rouge, and other high-profile films.

Celebrities like Micheal Cain, John Cleese, and Pierce Brosnan are just a few of the clients for whom he has written. But Fowler did not limit his activities to film marketing. He also wrote ‘Menz Insana’, a graphic novel (DC Comics) that received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.
While he has written plays and worked with Hollywood Studios (Paramount) to make video games (War of the Worlds), most people know the author for his novels.

Fowler made quite the splash in 1988 when he published ‘Roofworld’, his first thriller. The book became a bestseller. The novels that followed (‘Rune’, ‘Spanky’, ‘Disturbia’, etc.) proved that Fowler wasn’t just another one-hit-wonder.

Though, some will argue that his career only took off when he wrote the ‘Bryant and May’ books. The series follows two members of the Peculiar Crimes Unit. Set between WWII and the present, most of the books stand on their own.

The author created the series because he liked the idea of exploring the lives of a pair of Golden Age detectives that had to overcome various obstacles in a modern setting.

He made them old because he wanted to counter the idea that only young people could be trusted to solve cases and right wrongs. He also wanted to write about protagonists that had a lifetime of experience to draw from.

The first novel in the series should have been the last. Fowler did not intend to turn the adventures of his elderly detectives into a series. The notion of following them over the course of several books did not appeal to him. But the interest in the characters kept growing. So Fowler wrote more novels in the series.

From what the author has seen, Bryant and May are popular because their age gives them a lot of experience. But it also permits them to act like immature children. They are eccentric and bad-tempered and that allows them to stand out. London is an important part of the novels. The author has a lot of books on London. He does extensive research on the city.
