Andre Norton was an American author that wrote science fiction, historical fiction, contemporary fiction, and fantasy. Born in 1912 in Cleveland, Ohio, to Adalbert Freely Norton and Bertha Stemm Norton, the author attended Collinwood High School, Cleveland.

She started writing in high school, editing a literary page in ‘The Collinwood Spotlight’ while contributing short stories to the high school newspaper. The author penned ‘Ralestone Luck’ during this period. Though, the novel wasn’t published until 1938. It became her second published novel.

After graduating from high school, Andrew attended Flora Stone Mather College (Western Reserve University). Her goal was to become a teacher. But the Depression forced her to abandon her studies in 1932.

Fortunately, she landed a position in the Cleveland Library System. It became her home for the next 18 years. Her debut novel came out in 1934, published under the ‘Andre Alice Norton’ pseudonym.

The author’s birth name was ‘Alice Mary Norton,’ but she legally changed it to ‘Andre Alice Norton.’ Andre wanted to write fantasy. But because boys were the primary target of the genre, she concluded that a name change would enhance her marketability.

She kept busy in the years that followed, joining the cataloging department in the Library of Congress, participating in a project to help people who lost their citizenship when the US entered the Second World War, buying a bookstore that eventually failed, and more.

But fiction was her primary passion. By the late 1950s, Andre had transitioned into a full-time writer, earning solid reviews from prominent critics like Kirkus and receiving recognition from accolades like the Hugo Award.

Besides becoming the only female founding member of SAGA (Swordsmen and Sorcerers’ Guild of America), she also earned an invitation from Gary Gygax to play Dungeons and Dragons. Later on, she wrote stories that utilized the Greyhawk setting.

When Lord of the Rings received an American release in 1963, the author responded to the popularity of Tolkien’s work by introducing ‘Witch World,’ a series of epic fantasy novels set on an alien planet.

By the time she died, Andre had secured the love and respect of the fantasy and science fiction communities, earning titles like ‘Grand Dame of Science Fiction and Fantasy.’

Despite her success, Andre was a private person that revealed little to nothing about her personal life. As far as anyone knows, she had neither a husband nor children.

Her health was fragile for the majority of her life. She spent several years in Winter Park, Florida, with her mother, who doubled as her editor and proofreader. She died in 2005. Congestive heart failure was the cause. Andre has no descendants.

The author has received numerous Hugo and World Fantasy Award (Lifetime Achievement) nominations. She finally won the World Fantasy Award in 1998.
