As a child, Caro doesn’t remember harboring a burning desire to write fiction for a living. But she read a lot. The author remembers discovering Desmond Bagley during her second year in school. A friend was trying to return a novel to the school library, but the librarian was busy, so the friend in question put the book down.
Caro was thirteen at the time. She started reading the Desmond Bagley novel and couldn’t stop. Her nose was still buried in the book when she walked home. Once she finished it, Caro read every other Desmond Bagley novel the school had.
Once she had consumed them all, she turned her attention to the town library. Bagley was a massive influence on the author. Though, back then, she did not expect to emulate him by writing her own novels.
Caro’s publishing journey began when she fractured her spine. She was bedridden for nine months. The experience was incredibly dull. So, she passed the time by writing. The result was the first two novels in her bibliography.
‘Absolution’ came out in 2007. It drew the attention of the New Blood Dagger Award. Caro’s second novel (Singing to the Dead) was equally successful, receiving awards recognition. Caro’s renown continued to grow as she attracted positive reviews from critics in Scotland and abroad. She hasn’t stopped writing since then.
The author finds inspiration in the things she sees and conversations she overhears. From what Caro has seen, everyone has a story. She is fortunate because her job allows her to treat lawyers and cops.
Other authors are more straightforward in their research. They have to introduce themselves as crime fiction writers before asking questions.
While the method works, Caro is convinced that it produces boring textbook answers. Her position allows her to prod her subjects organically. She doesn’t limit her line of questioning to the minutia of their work. She wants to know the mundane details because they add an element of authenticity to her stories.
Caro will also travel to the locations in her books. She admires Desmond Bagley because he always turned his locations into distinct characters. The author tries to do the same, which is why she travels. Online research isn’t enough.
She wants to walk the land, breathe the air, and see the sights before she can reproduce them on paper.
Caro Ramsay Awards
Her books have been shortlisted for a CWA New Blood Dagger Award (Absolution) and longlisted for a Theakston’s Old Peculiar Crime Novel of the Year Award (Singing to the Dead).
Best Caro Ramsay Books
The author studied forensic medical science to improve the accuracy of her crime fiction. She has a diploma. Caro’s best books include:
Absolution: Anna was dying when Alan McAlpine met her. Someone had thrown acid at the woman, destroying her beautiful face. She couldn’t tell the detective who had attacked her, and neither could she identify the father of her newborn. Even more astounding were the uncut diamonds she had smuggled into Scotland. It was an odd case.
Two decades later, Alan is tasked with solving an even more bizarre mystery. Someone the press had dubbed the ‘Crucifixion Killer’ had murdered two women.
Another female victim was disfigured at the sight of a similar murder years earlier. Alan realizes that the investigations of the past are connected to the crimes of the present. He must find the link before more women die.
Singing to the Dead: A seven-year-old boy was gone. No one could find him, which was a problem because he was wearing leggings and a thin fleece on a night where temperatures had fallen to minus three. Little Luca made things worse when he also vanished.
Finding the boys won’t be easy. The squad is already on its knees because of the flu. If that wasn’t enough, they have to contend with an annoying boss and a disruptive press. Anderson and Costello have little in the way of time. They must find the person snatching children from Glasgow’s streets before it’s too late.
