Elizabeth Moon is an American author that writes science fiction and fantasy. Born in 1945 in McAllen, Texas, Moon spent her childhood just a few miles from the Mexican border.

She became fascinated with the concept of culture and how it can shape human beings. A former student at Rice University, where she studied History and Cultural Anthropology, and the University of Texas, where she got her biology degree, the author spent three years in the Marine Corps.

Her husband was also in the military. The couple has one son. Moon started writing at the age of six. She penned a story about a dog. In her teens, she turned her attention to science fiction. At the time, writing was a hobby. Everyone kept telling her that it was a waste of time. As such, she couldn’t take it seriously.

Moon had to fight to stop herself from writing. But she never succeeded. She was born to write fiction. She couldn’t deny her gift. Some people may call her a late bloomer because she was already in her mid-30s when she started writing professionally.

The author secured a column in a county weekly newspaper. Later on, she experimented with short stories, some of which appeared in publications like ‘Analog’ and ‘Sword and Sorceress.’

Finally, in 1988, her first novel saw the light of day. Any doubts she had went out the window when the book won an award (Compton Crook). The author had to fight to get the book published.

Initially, every publisher she approached rejected ‘Sheepfarmer’s Daughter.’ On one particular occasion, her agent sent Moon a rejection letter from Baen, which listed the reasons why they had rejected the book.

One of those reasons suggested that a woman couldn’t produce believable military fantasy. Rather than accepting the rejection, Moon wrote back, explaining why all the reasons Baen stated were wrong. She also pointed out that her background as a Marine qualified her to write military-based fantasies.

Her agent delivered the response to Baen, and Jim Baen reconsidered his position. He took a closer look at Moon’s book and decided to publish it. The author respects Jim because he has recounted the story to other people on several occasions.

Since ‘Sheepfarmer’s Daughter’ was released, the author has continued to churn out military science fiction and fantasy. She tries to write every day, working on her first drafts in the morning.

She will write for as long as it takes to achieve her goal. Sometimes, the author is done before lunch. On other occasions, she will write until 11 PM.

Elizabeth Moon doesn't seem to have an upcoming book. Their newest book is Deeds of Youth and was released on July, 18th 2023. It is the newest book in the Paksenarrion Series.
