The author has admitted in interviews that he abandoned English and literature at the age of 16 and science at 18. The subjects did not appeal to him, which is why his success as a science fiction writer is so ironic.

Hamilton read a lot of science fiction during his childhood. The author was a teenager in the 1970s, and life was largely dull. Science fiction provided the sort of escape he craved. It also encouraged him to develop a critical attitude.

Authors like Clarke, Niven, and Asimov inspired him. Unlike some writers, Hamilton did not believe that he could pen better stories than his idols. However, he was certain that he could replicate the quality of their storytelling.

He doesn’t remember making the decision to write fiction. He had toyed with the idea for a long time. It grew in strength during his twenties until he finally surrendered to the desire, bought a typewriter, and started putting his stories on paper.

‘Dead Day’ was the first story he sold. It appeared in Fear Magazine back in 1989. A few years later, the author published his first novel (Mindstar Rising). He added several notable titles to his bibliography in the years that followed, including ‘The Naked God’ and ‘A Quantum Murder.’

The author has grown immensely in the years since his first novel debuted. His approach to outlining has become more sophisticated. The writing process is still difficult. But Hamilton has more confidence.

He trusts his ability to deliver competently written stories. The author appreciates the fact that the science fiction genre has expanded over the years to include a multitude of sub-genres, creating more room for new writers to tell interesting stories.

Additionally, real-life science and technology have come a long way. Hamilton goes to great lengths to ensure that his scientific concepts are plausible. But he avoids doing too much research. The author knows that unnecessary detail can destroy the momentum of a good story.

Hamilton’s books are balanced. They include multiple characters that provide a variety of viewpoints. He tries to give each character a purpose, to explain why their presence matters. While he doesn’t have favorite characters, the author has a soft spot for Gore Burnelli. He enjoys writing the character because the two of them have opposing views.

Writer’s block isn’t an issue for Hamilton because he makes extensive notes. He has bad writing days on occasion. But the author always knows what he needs to write. Writer’s block has never stopped him from making progress.

He tries to maintain regular office hours. Hamilton spends his mornings doing revisions on the pages he wrote the day before. In the afternoon, he writes new pages. But he doesn’t obsess over daily goals and word counts.

Like most authors, he misses deadlines. A daily word count would simply remind him of his failures. He doesn’t see the point.

Peter F. Hamilton Awards

Hamilton has received Arthur C. Clarke and John W Campbell Memorial Award nominations.

Best Peter F. Hamilton Books

The author’s schedule is so hectic that he doesn’t get as much time as he would like to read for pleasure. But when the opportunity arises, he reads science fiction. Hamilton’s best books include:

Pandora’s Star: Dudley Bose just made a disturbing observation. A member of the Intersolar Commonwealth, living in the year 2380, Bose saw a star disappear. Wilson Kime has been tasked with leading a mission to investigate the anomaly.

But the Guardians of Selfhood are convinced that an alien entity will use Wilson’s ship to execute its nefarious plans.

Judas Unchained: In trying to investigate an anomaly, the Commonwealth unleashed a dangerous threat. Now 23 planets are gone. The Prime have the blood of hundreds of millions on their hands, and their crusade has just begun.

Meanwhile, the Guardians of Selfhood told everyone who would listen that an alien entity had infiltrated the Commonwealth. For their diligence, they were branded as terrorists and hunted relentlessly.

But they were right. New evidence shows that the Starflyer is a real threat, and it has agents in every corner of the Commonwealth. But no one knows for sure whether the alien entity is an ally or an enemy of The Prime.
