Witemeyer is not one of those authors that started writing at a young age. It took her a while to take an interest in writing. In fact, when she was young, the author only wrote when her school assignments forced her.
She had no interest in journals and diaries. But her imagination was active. She couldn’t stop daydreaming. It never occurred to the author that she would eventually transition from reading stories to writing them.
Witemeyer did not have the creativity that gave some of her peers the confidence to pursue publishing at a young age. She relies heavily on her faith, trusting God to fill her mind with ideas for stories.
Her journey to publishing success was relatively slow. Even though she started writing seriously in 2003, she did not secure a book deal until 2009. She has attributed her success to an unexpected encounter in 2007.
Witemeyer attended the American Christian Fiction Writers Conference (Dallas). After arriving early and joining the volunteer team, the author met Karen Schurrer.
Witemeyer had no idea at the time that Schurrer worked for Bethany House as an editor. When news of Schurrer’s identity reached her, the author was ecstatic. However, she was also hesitant to pitch her story to the editor.
Two days later, another writer at their lunch table asked if they could submit their proposals to Schurrer. To their surprise, the editor accepted the request. Witemeyer was so sure that God had orchestrated her meeting with Schurrer that she did not expect the editor to reject her manuscript.
And yet, that is precisely what happened. The publisher liked Witemeyer’s proposal, so much so that they requested a full manuscript. But then the author received terrible news.
The acquisitions editor enjoyed her writing. However, her plot mirrored a book they had already published. But before she could despair, the acquisitions editor praised the dress shop component in the manuscript and then asked Witemeyer to write a new story that used the dress shop.
The author couldn’t re-engineer her first manuscript to shine a spotlight on the dress shop because the business went up in flames within the first few pages. Rather than fighting to reshape the first manuscript, the author decided to write a new one from scratch.
The prospect of starting again did not appeal to Witemeyer. However, Bethany House was her dream publisher, and she was determined to secure a book deal from the company.
Her dream became a reality in 2009 when she signed her three-book contract with the publisher.
Karen Witemeyer Awards
Witemeyer’s accolades include Vivian and Carol Awards. She has also received a Rita Award nomination.
Best Karen Witemeyer Books
The author has several interests besides reading and writing. She’s a cross stitcher and baker. Witemeyer’s best books include:
Short Straw Bride: Most people knew better than to trespass on Archer land. Meredith wasn’t suicidal. She had a debt to pay. An enemy was determined to destroy the Archer brothers, and Meredith had to act before the worst came to pass.
Travis Archer should have sent the stranger away. But the girl wasn’t a stranger. He knew her vivid blue eyes. More importantly, he couldn’t ignore the selfless act that had injured her.
His honor compelled him to rescue her. Meredith was not stupid. She knew that Travis was no longer the gallant man she had fallen for. But she would stand by his side through thick and thin.
A Tailor-Made Bride: Jericho and Hannah were a poor match. Hannah was confounded by Jericho’s gruff mannerisms. She was more than happy to stay away from him, even though his surprising acts of kindness would occasionally warm her heart.
For his part, Jericho did not think that much of Hannah. In his eyes, she was just like every other seamstress, a shallow woman with an unhealthy obsession for fashion.
He wanted nothing to do with her. But Hannah wasn’t quite what he expected. Their paths crossed when the seamstress decided to help Jericho’s sister. Neither woman foresaw the consequences their actions would ultimately unleash on the town.
She was just as surprised by the opportunity it gave her to bridge the gulf that kept her and Jericho apart.
