Jayne Castle is an American author that writes romance. Her married name is Jayne Ann Krentz. ‘Jayne Castle’ is her maiden name as well as a pen name she occasionally uses when she writes fiction.

The American author has published novels as Jayne Taylor, Amanda Quick, Jayne Bentley, and Stephanie James, to mention but a few.

Born in 1948 in Cobb, California, Jayne attended the University of California, Santa Cruz (B.A. in History) and San Jose State University (Library Science). The author studied library science because she realized soon after graduating from the University of California that her history degree was unlikely to get her a job.

Later on, she married Frank Krentz. After moving to the Virgin Islands, Jayne tried to pursue a career as an elementary school librarian. But she grew to dislike the teaching component of her position.

The Duke University library system was far more rewarding. But library science was not her primary passion. The author wanted to write novels. She started penning romance stories with a paranormal element during her stint at Duke. It took Jayne six years to secure a publisher.

She received so many rejection letters that the author was tempted to quit. But for Jayne, writing was a compulsion. It was in her blood. She couldn’t walk away from it no matter how hard she tried.
Jayne believes that most aspiring authors share a similar trait. They eventually succeed because they have a stubborn streak that won’t permit them to surrender.

Initially, she published her novels as ‘Jayne Castle.’ Unfortunately, she had to abandon the name after leaving her publisher. The writer’s contract with the publisher prevented her from attaching the name to new novels for a decade.

She responded by creating a plethora of pen names. But after a while, she discarded them all in favor of ‘Jayne Ann Krenzt,’ her married name.

In the 1990s, Jayne resurrected the ‘Jayne Castle’ pseudonym, using it to publish stories set in the distant future. The author hates critics that dismiss popular fiction, especially romance.

She is drawn to the genre because it tackles the emotional bonds that enrich existence. Inspired by the likes of Nancy Drew and Walter Farley, her past as a librarian comes in handy when she performs research for her historical novels.

She maintains a fairly strict schedule, writing six days a week from 7 in the morning to noon. Jayne doesn’t waste her afternoons. She assigns those final hours of the day to research.

The author relies on a loose outline to guide her. She has tried to create detailed outlines. But Jayne always abandons them after a few chapters as new ideas flood her mind, forcing the author to rethink her story. Her books explore concepts like honor and family.
