William Bernhardt is an American author that writes suspense thrillers. A native of Oklahoma, he attended the University of Oklahoma College of Law, from where he acquired his Law Degree.

Nearly two decades later, he got his Masters in English from the University of Tulsa. Despite landing a position at a prestigious law firm, Bernhardt was generous with his time, using his knowledge and experience to teach underprivileged children about the law.

He also took several pro bono cases. The author was determined to help those less fortunate than him, which is why he created the Red Sneaker Writing Center. The organization hosts annual writing workshops. Notable graduates from Bernhardt’s writing seminars include Paul Dalzell, Lara Wells, Sarah Rees Brennan, and Burke Holbrook, to mention but a few.

He created Balkan Press to help aspiring writers. When he was struggling to find his footing in publishing, no one helped him. Bernhardt doesn’t remember meeting any published authors during the earliest days of his burgeoning career.

He believes that writing conferences and workshops would have done wonders for him. Bernhardt was surrounded by naysayers that dismissed his dreams as delusions of grandeur.

He wants to give brand-new writers a robust network of support, which is why Balkan Press has published so many first-time authors. Some people still know the organization by its previous name: HAWK Publishing.

They are responsible for names like P.C. Cast. Bernhardt joined his company’s writing program in the mid-2000s. He wanted to share everything he had learned with other enthusiastic writers.

The author’s publishing journey started at a very early age. Bernhardt was a shy, bespectacled kid that took every opportunity that came his way to visit the library.

His librarians were kind. They took note of his interests and encouraged him to read. Bernhardt was 11 when he submitted a poem to Highlights Magazine.

The rejection they sent back to the author was the first of over 300 that he kept. He appreciated the rejection letters because they told him that his submissions left a lot to be desired.

Bernhardt persisted, writing, submitting, and making improvements along the way until he finally learned that Ballantine was ready to publish his book. The author takes great pleasure in the fact that he writes books for a living because he has so much freedom.

Bernhardt’s law firm kept him so busy that he did not spend as much time with his first child as he would have liked when the boy was born. But that changed when he became a full-time writer.

He doesn’t understand writers that complain about the challenges of their careers when they have more control over their schedules than people in other fields.

Bernhardt enjoys talking to his fans. He answers every email he receives. The author loves hearing from people whose lives have changed because of his books. One reader, a judge, amazed him when he revealed that Bernhardt’s hero, Ben Kincaid, had molded his professional ethics.
