The author spent ten years teaching Law. When he wasn’t working at the Wigan College of Technology (Principal), the author was writing law texts. By the time he died, Lewis had written dozens of crime novels.

The most notable books featured Inspector Crow as a protagonist. The character stood out to critics because of his wry perspective on life in the English Countryside.

Lewis also created Eric Ward, a police officer that abandoned law enforcement when his eyesight declined. The author’s characters are lively, and his ability to create a sense of place is second to none.

Lewis did not wholly abandon the Law. Even after taking an interest in crime fiction, he continued to pen articles about the law, covering legal history.

The author was fascinated by scandals from the Victorian era. He would read about the life and legal woes of the people in Victorian Northumberland.

Best Roy Lewis Books

The author lived a rich life. Besides writing fiction and nonfiction, he had business interests in places like Singapore. Lewis’s best books include:

The Sedleigh Hall Murder: Eric Ward was a policeman. But his time in law enforcement ended abruptly when a glaucoma diagnosis proved too prohibitive. Fortunately, Eric was not out of options.

He had a sharp mind, which he used to explore the legal field. The attorney was still trying to find his footing at a law firm when he landed two interesting cases.

One case revolved around Arthur Egan’s estate. The man was a murderer. Or, at the very least, the courts had convicted him of manslaughter. The other case forced Eric to dig into the holdings of Lord Malcomb.

On the surface, the two cases seemed reasonably straightforward. More importantly, they had nothing to do with each other. But once Eric began to dig, he found evidence suggesting that Eric and Malcomb’s affairs were actually intertwined.

Additionally, from what he could see, Egan was not the murderer everyone claimed he was. A grave injustice had been done, and Eric’s moral compass wouldn’t permit him to sit back and do his job as his employers had instructed. The lawyer was determined to take action.

This book is the first introduction of Eric Ward. Initially published under the ‘A Certain Blindness’ title, the novel takes readers to a time before forensic tools like DNA testing existed.

Without smartphones and computers, Eric must rely on his wit as he attempts to make sense of the mystery surrounding Egan, a man who was potentially framed for manslaughter.

Eric is stubborn. His superiors want him to move on. They don’t want the attorney to waste the firm’s resources on a fruitless undertaking. But Eric is determined to investigate.

A Lover Too Many: Peter Marlin kept insisting that he was innocent. Someone had strangled his wife to death, and Peter was the obvious suspect. People couldn’t help but look at him because his wife had been absent for so long.

No one had bothered to explain her absence. If that wasn’t enough, Peter had already embraced a new lover by the time his wife returned. He had plenty of reasons to want her dead.

But did that make him a killer? Inspector John Crow was tasked with finding out. The mild-mannered fellow was stationed in London, working for the Murder Squad.

But no one welcomed his visits to Wales and the Midlands. The regional crime squads saw his presence as an intrusion and did not hesitate to let him know that he wasn’t wanted.

Fortunately for Crow, his will was strong enough to weather the opposition. He also possessed strong moral feelings that wouldn’t permit him to abandon a case simply because the regional police wanted the outsider to stay away.

‘A Lover Too Many’ is the first book in the Inspector John Crow series. The novel is set in an era before modern investigative tools existed. As such, Crow must solve cases by collecting clues and interviewing suspects.
