And in a way, he feels like he satisfied that urge during the four decades he spent practicing law. Yes, he was writing technical material. However, the legal motions and briefs required the author to turn extensive research into compelling stories.

He told those stories to judges and juries to sell his point of view, an objective he achieved admirably. As such, Balson spent those four decades in the legal field exercising his storytelling muscle. It was only a matter of time before he turned his attention to fiction.

That finally happened in the early 2000s when he traveled to Warsaw. The author was in Poland because of a telephone services lawsuit. The country fascinated him because the Second World War ended decades ago, yet the scars of the conflict were still visible for all to see as if the nation was still struggling to recover from the war.

He attributed what he saw to the effort the government was making to honor the heroism the country’s people displayed during WWII. Balson noticed the memorials erected in memory of the people that started the uprising.

The author tried to manifest that heroism in ‘Once We Were Brothers,’ his debut novel. He was fortunate because he had a wealth of information to draw from.

Balson studied history in college and had a strong foundation where WWII was concerned. This did not stop the author from visiting Holocaust museums, talking to experts, and browsing diaries, pictures, and letters on the internet to secure firsthand information about the horrors of the Second World War.

‘Once We Were Brothers’ was not the only book inspired by Balson’s travels. Later on, he wrote ‘Saving Sophie’ after making several visits to the Middle East.

With ‘Karolina’s Twins,’ his third novel, the author relied on the remarkable stories Fay Waldman told him. Waldman survived several Nazi prison camps. The two met while Balson was doing his ‘Once We Were Brothers’ book tour.

Balson couldn’t get her story out of his mind, and it provided the backdrop for his international bestseller. The author has repeated this pattern over the years. The trials and tribulations of real people fascinate him.

Besides writing and working as a litigation lawyer, the author is also an adjunct professor of business law (University of Chicago).

Best Ronald H. Balson Books

The author has encouraged aspiring writers to persevere. He received dozens of rejections during the early stages of his career. Some rejections were quite thoughtless, telling him he shouldn’t be a writer.

He realized that some of those comments came from people that hadn’t even read his book. Eventually, he decided to self-publish the book with his son. It sold over a hundred thousand copies, proving that perseverance pays. Balson’s best books include:

Once We Were Brothers: Solomon has a bone to pick with Elliot Rosenzweig. However, some people are not convinced that his case has merit. Elliot was attending a fundraiser when an accusation turned his world upside down.

Solomon wanted the world to know that the respected civic leader was actually a former Nazi SS officer. Solomon knew Otto Piatek. His family raised Otto when he was abandoned as a child.

But the SS officer betrayed them during the war. He may have changed his name, but Solomon knows the real man hiding behind the façade. But he needs attorney Catherine Lockhart’s help to bring Elliot to justice.

Karolina’s Twins: Lena and Karolina survived difficult times. They barely made it through the atrocities of the Holocaust. Lena has done her best to keep her dark past buried.

However, her dubious account of her life is raising a lot of questions. Lena needs Catherine Lockhart’s help to appraise her story. Her son is up to no good.

He wants people to think that the lawsuit he filed has good intentions, but Lena knows better. The only way she can fight back is to tell her story to Catherine.
