The Kray twins ruled London’s criminal underworld with an iron fist in the 1960s. But the authorities eventually convicted the brothers of killing two gangsters. Ronnie was diagnosed with schizophrenia and sent to Broadmoor, where he died in 1995.

Reggie and Roberta met a year later. The author was a 36-year-old English graduate. Reggie was making a movie about Ronnie, and Roberta’s friend was helping him. When circumstances compelled the friend in question to pull out, he recommended Roberta as a replacement.

At the time, the author had heard about the Krays, but she knew next to nothing about them. Meeting Reggie did not bother Roberta. However, going to prison made her nervous.

People that followed their relationship with great interest in the years that followed might be surprised to learn that Roberta and Reggie did not like each other romantically, not at first.

Roberta thought Reggie was fascinating as a person, but only because she couldn’t understand how he had survived all those years in prison without going mad.

The gangster kept asking Roberta to visit him. He was single at the time. Reggie’s first wife had killed herself. Their relationship took an interesting turn when the anniversary of Ronnie’s death came around.

On its own, the event was traumatic for Reggie. Things got worse when his nephew died. But the gangster couldn’t show weakness in prison. Roberta gave Reggie an outlet for his emotions.

Before long, an intimate relationship had developed. Roberta grew to love Reggie because she saw a different side of him, a side the books and movies never showed.

The author realized that Reggie was a complex man with several layers. He was also a talker, which meant that they had endless conversations over the phone. They couldn’t date like ordinary people, so their relationship developed gradually via the many conversations they shared.

Their 1997 wedding happened in the prison chapel. When Reggie was diagnosed with cancer, the authorities released him on compassionate grounds.

The pair spent the next month together before Reggie died at the age of 66. After mourning her husband’s death, the author wrote ‘Reg Kray: A Man Apart,’ Reggie Kray’s biography.

For Roberta, the book was therapeutic. It allowed her to hold onto her husband for a little longer by writing about the horrible experiences he encountered in prison.

She couldn’t write the book without investigating Reggie’s time in prison. Ultimately, she found a way to reconcile her perception of her husband with the violent killer portrayed in the many accounts she discovered.

Later, she veered into fiction, writing numerous stories about women who had to contend with unfamiliar situations and challenges.

Best Roberta Kray Books

The author has repeatedly commended her husband for giving her so much confidence. She was quiet and more introverted when she met him. Roberta’s best books include:

Survivor: Lolly started looking after herself at a young age. Her mother wasn’t quite right. Angela was always ill and strangely quiet. But every so often, she would wander through the Mansfield Estate shouting incessantly. Lolly knew she was on her own.

Mal’s daughter disappeared years ago. But Mal was not ready to let her go, especially since the police never found her body. He couldn’t give up on her.

And now, a private investigator had rewarded his perseverance by revealing a connection between Lolly and his daughter.

Stolen: Lolly knew the good times couldn’t last, and she was right. The luxuries she had grown accustomed to were gone, and she had descended back into the world she knew.

Fortunately, she understood that world and had what it took to survive. Her biggest concern was her guardian. The last time she had checked, Mal Fury was in prison.

More importantly, he had mere months left on his sentence. And yet, he had risked it all by escaping. Why?

Lolly had a hunch. The only other person that would compel Mal to take such drastic measures was his daughter. But she had gone missing nineteen years ago.

What did Mal know? Where was he going? What was he doing with his freedom?

When Does The Next Roberta Kray book come out?
