Di Morrissey is an Australian bestseller that writes romance and general fiction. Di was born in 1943 in Wingham. She spent her childhood in Pittwater, a remote location that introduced the author to fascinating characters like Chips Rafferty, a famous Australian actor.

Rafferty lived in the Australian outback before he went into acting, and the celebrity was more than happy to share those experiences with the young girl. Di also lived near Dorothea Mackellar, a critically acclaimed Australian poet who encouraged the author to share her stories with others by writing them down.

For the most part, Di’s childhood was ordinary. But then she lost her father and brother unexpectedly, and everything changed. Fortunately, the family had Rafferty. The actor looked after them during their period of mourning.

He even helped raise funds for their trip to California. Di’s mother had a sister in Los Angeles that wanted the pair to live with her. The trip helped Di’s mother, who dipped her toes into TV. The medium was still new, and after finding her footing in the field, she went back to Australia with her daughter and made her mark on the Australian Film and Television scene.

Even as a little girl, Di knew that she wanted to write novels for a living. She got her start at the tender age of 17 when The Australian Women’s Weekly brought her on as a cadet. Even though she started at the bottom, the author took her duties seriously.

She worked hard during the next four years of training, finally emerging as a fully-fledged journalist with a gift for writing, communicating, and researching. But rather than plying her trade in Australia, she went to the UK like many of her peers and spent several years with the Daily Mail Group.

Her encounter with Peter Morrissey was coincidental. Di was traveling back to Australia when she met the American peace Corps worker. Theirs was a quick romance. The pair were engaged just two weeks later.

The happy couple planted roots in Honolulu. While there, Di became a TV presenter. But because her husband worked for the State Department, the couple was always traveling. Peter’s postings took them to places like Indonesia, Singapore, and Guyana.

But Di missed her home. More importantly, she had a strong desire to write stories and could no longer ignore it. So she returned home and secured a spot on a current affairs breakfast TV show (Good Morning Australia), the first of its kind in Australia.

Di took the job because she had to earn a living. But part of her regretted it because her days started at 3 am. She stuck around for seven grueling years. But then a friend brought to Di’s attention a treatment the author had written for a TV series.

The friend, a literary agent, encouraged Di to turn the treatment into a book, and she listened. Finishing the manuscript meant abandoning Good Morning Australia and moving to Byron Bay. ‘Heart of the Dreaming’ came out in 1991.
