He was also stationed at Fort Carson for three years (Infantry Company Commander). Haig’s resume includes several interesting detours, including the author’s internship with the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Master’s degree he secured from Harvard, his contribution to the Lebanon Peacekeeping Operation, and more.
At one point, Haig was the special assistant to John M. Shalikashvili (Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff). This was after working with the commander-in-chief of the United Nations Command and combined forces command (Seoul) in a similar position.
By the time he left active duty in 1997, the author was a lieutenant colonel. Life as a civilian kept Haig busy. Many of the veteran’s followers read the articles he wrote for publications like Vanity Fair and The New York Times.
No one expected Haig to veer into publishing. And yet, that is what happened in 2001 when the author published ‘Secret Sanction,’ his first novel. Many people take an interest in writing and publishing after discovering and obsessing over well-crafted stories.
Haig was the opposite. He decided to write fiction because he came across some bestselling books he could not stand. Haig couldn’t understand how the authors of those novels had secured publishing deals to begin with.
It lit a fire under Haig once he realized he could do better. Although, he quickly realized that thinking about writing was vastly different from actually sitting down and writing. Haig’s first novel was a bit of a mess.
Like many amateurs, he did not edit enough. The author believes that an aspiring writer’s debut novel is vital because it can either sink or elevate their career. Haig’s first book had a great story with a compelling theme, but he made several mistakes that helpful readers continuously pointed out in emails.
Haig also dropped the ball in the areas of character development and dialog. Now that he knows better, the author encourages aspiring writers to inject more effort into refining their manuscripts. They must deliver a debut novel so well written that it compels jaded agents and publishers to take a chance on them.
Haig was lucky. A friend of his was at dinner at a New York restaurant when one of his companions revealed that her husband was a book agent. The friend in question mentioned that he knew someone who had just finished a manuscript. That unexpected conversation was all it took to get Haig’s manuscript in the right hands.
People can’t get enough of the author’s books because Haig uses his experience to tell engaging stories. When he first joined the army, Haig had no idea that his adventures would inform the fiction he would eventually write.
Best Brian Haig Books
The author’s activities outside the army are not limited to writing and publishing. He also works as a military analyst for Fox News. Haig’s best books include:
Secret Sanction: Sean Drummond was cocky. But the Army lawyer’s arrogance was earned. He was good at his job. When his superiors tasked Drummond with investigating a Bosnian massacre, he knew what they expected.
The United States Army wanted to close the book on the entire incident before it made the headlines. The last thing the US government wanted was for the world to learn about the role a Green Beret team played in the deaths of 35 Serbian soldiers.
Drummond was determined to find the truth. However, he was unprepared for the moral dilemma it created.
The President’s Assassin: Sean Drummond was part of the Office of Special Projects. The newly enlisted operative had a challenging case on his hands. The fact that someone killed six people in a Virginia mansion was hardly important. People died every day.
But this mystery was different. One of the victims was the White House Chief of Staff. Drummond was not the guy the CIA deployed when a White House employee died. But again, this was different.
The killer left a message behind which claimed that the president would die in the next two days. Now Drummond has joined the hunt for a cold, calculating hitman. The operative cannot afford to fail.
