They moved every six months, forcing the author to change schools. Gilman abandoned formal education at fourteen to work. He wanted to support his mother and siblings. But destiny eventually swept the family to Africa.

The author was in his mid-teens when he began driving construction workers in a 1940s Ford Saloon. Gilman had to adapt to life at the bottom of the rung in Apartheid South Africa. His age and lack of qualifications placed the author in an unfavorable position.

Gilman applied for several jobs. But even when he passed the entrance exams, potential employers rejected him because he couldn’t present the relevant educational qualifications. Things changed when the author started lying about his age.

He was able to work as a traffic cop for a year because his superiors thought he was 21. Gilman thought his big break had finally come when an editor hired him as a trainee journalist. The individual in question had opened a new weekly magazine. Gilman couldn’t have asked for a more appealing opportunity.

Unfortunately, the authorities suspected the editor of Communist subversive activities. They raided the office on Gilman’s first day at work, destroying any prospects he had of a career in journalism and paving the way for the most challenging chapter in the author’s life.

First, he joined the Fire and Rescue Service. The experience exposed Gilman to shocking levels of violence. But he held his own and even passed the fire service exams. However, the author was still underage, and becoming an official Station Officer trainee would have revealed his lies.

So he left to become a photographer. A friend that worked at a magazine taught Gilman everything he knew before helping the author secure the equipment needed to thrive in the field.

But even though he lived an extraordinary life as a photographer, making decent money and partying with models, the author felt uneasy, almost as if he was out of touch with the real world. An incident with a firearm pushed him to return to England, where he drove lorries and bulldozers while waiting for lucrative opportunities in journalism to manifest.

He worked in Canada briefly and then migrated to Australia. By that point, Gilman was officially 21 years old. The next several years were tumultuous. The author worked as a logger, fought IRA terrorists for the British army, tackled the selection course for the Paras, and more.

Writing only entered the picture after Gilman found a wife, moved to South Africa, attended night school, and joined an international publishing company. The author taught himself how to write (in an era without writing courses), penned several radio plays, serials, movie and TV scripts, and finally, novels.
