He wrote his first novel at ten. ‘Swinger Danger’ was an autobiographical tale about a boy that built a rope swing and fell, breaking his wrist as his parents had predicted. Housewright self-published the book using the hand-cranked printing press his parents gave him.

The author was forty when his second novel (Penance) came out. Although, Housewright did plenty of writing in the preceding years. He worked for his high school’s newspaper as an editor but lost the position after releasing an editorial condemning the Vietnam War.

He joined the Minneapolis Tribune in his college years, covering stories too small to draw the attention of senior reporters. After a stint at the Albert Lea Evening Tribune and the Grand Forks Herald (North Dakota), the author went into advertising.

He worked for several Twin Cities advertising agencies as a copywriter and creative director, winning accolades like CLIO that many of his readers have never even heard of, and ultimately becoming a partner at his own agency.

Housewright was still the creative director at Gerber/Housewright Advertising when he decided to return to his first love. The desire to write fiction had haunted him since he was a child, and Housewright was elated when his first novel came out and won an Award.

The author sold the advertising agency to his partner and decided to dedicate his time to writing and publishing. Over the years, Housewright has published numerous full-length novels and short stories.

The author has not forgotten his roots. He frequently incorporates his home state into the books he writes, using real places, traditions, and speech patterns from Minnesota to shape his stories and characters.

Housewright looks at his career as a business. While he enjoys the activity, he doesn’t write for fun. The author meets many aspiring writers that are often shocked and overwhelmed by the rigors of publishing.

They don’t realize that authors can lose their publishers at a moment’s notice despite selling tens of thousands of copies of their books. Housewright started writing for money at a young age. As such, he isn’t shocked when the publishing industry fails to pay him what he thinks he’s worth.

The author’s experience as a copywriter and creative director in advertising prepared him adequately. He knows how to edit books to perfection, removing the parts readers typically skip and producing a highly engaging product.

David Housewright Awards

Housewright has won Edgar and Minnesota Book Awards.

Best David Housewright Books

The author teaches a class at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis. He shows aspiring novelists how to succeed in publishing. Housewright’s best books include:

A Hard Ticket Home: Mac was bored. He had too much time and money on his hands. As such, he couldn’t really refuse when a friend asked for a favor. Stacy Carlson had leukemia; her only bone marrow match was Jamie, her older sister.

But Jamie was gone. She ran away from home a long time ago. Stacy’s family wanted the ex-cop to find her before the nine-year-old girl’s health deteriorated. Mac knew where to look. However, the pimps and drug dealers he consulted had nothing of significance to tell him.

And the few clues Mac found were pointing to the city’s most respected businessmen. Something was afoot, and Mac wasn’t sure what, but he needed to find out before he drew the ire of the wrong person.

Tin City: Mr. Mosley wanted to find out why his bees kept dying. Mac accepted the request because he spent his days doing favors for his friends. The former police officer was so rich that he had plenty of time to spare.

Therefore, finding the person responsible for Mr. Mosley’s dead bees was barely an inconvenience. It gave Mac something to do. Although, this time around, he might have bitten off more than he could chew.

Crosetti, the man killing Mr. Mosley’s bees, had a sharper edge than Mac anticipated. Crosetti was not content with making threats. He disappeared soon after, leaving a vicious rape and a lifeless body in his wake. Now Mac is on the warpath. He won’t rest until he finds Crosetti.
