She left a nice job and the security it offered to migrate to France with her husband. While there, she made several friends, pursued new hobbies, and found the time to write. Valpy sent her first novel to several agents, but they kept rejecting her.

So she changed tactics (after reading an article about indie publishing) and self-published the manuscript. Initially, sales picked up, but only because her friends and family had convinced everyone they knew to buy the book.

Once she had exhausted the purchasing power of her social network, the author was at a loss. But then she discovered Bookouture. The publisher was new, and they wanted authors to submit their manuscripts.

Valpy obliged, and to her shock, Bookouture accepted her submission. However, they wanted her to re-write the book, a challenging task that Valpy undertook all the same, assisted by a team of diligent professionals. The novel finally hit bookshelves in 2013.

The author is obsessed with World War 2. The era fascinates her because those years are recent enough that people remember them. The individuals who lived through WWII still exist. But they are dying off at a rapid rate, and Valpy believes that authors should record their first-hand testimonies for future generations before their voices vanish forever.

Valpy has also noted that laypeople know more about WWII today because so many documents have been declassified. Governments worldwide continue to release new information revealing facts about the Second World War that were previously hidden.

This has created opportunities for people like Fiona Valpy to tell fresh stories about the era. The author is drawn to tales of courage and resilience. She takes a particular interest in the trials women faced during those days, the fact that they felt disempowered but, nonetheless, continued to forge notable identities for themselves during one of the worst conflicts in human history.

Her research has shown Valpy that WWII did more for women than some of her modern readers realize because it freed them from society’s limitations. Speaking of research, Valpy tries to visit the countries and locations that appear in her books.

This isn’t always possible. For instance, the covid 19 pandemic forced the author to cancel her trip to Morocco. So she closed the gaps in her knowledge by reading travel guides and looking at maps.

When she has the opportunity to journey to a location, Valpy uses YouTube videos to identify the best places to visit. The internet will also educate her on the historical figures she wants to cover.

The author writes her first draft with a pen and paper. Then she types the book in Word, editing as she goes.

Fiona Valpy Awards

Valpy has received Romantic Novel, British Book, Walter Scott, and Saltire Award nominations.
