Precluding a short stint on the Gulf Coast, the Birmingham area was Fannie’s home for most of her childhood. Her father pushed the author to pursue her writing interests at a young age. She was just ten when she wrote her first stage play.
She took some detours along the way, such as entering the Miss Alabama pageant and landing a scholarship that sent her to a local acting school for a year, but writing was never far from her mind.
Every step Fannie took brought her closer to a future in publishing. That included landing a spot on a Birmingham morning show. Although she abandoned that job when they denied her request for a raise.
The author did not put nearly as much thought into the ‘Fannie Flagg’ name as people assume. She adopted the pseudonym after moving to New York City and deciding to pursue acting. ‘Patricia Neal’ was ill-fitting because Actor’s Equity had a registered member called Patricia Neal.
Therefore, using her birth name was out of the question. Her grandfather recalled several comedians from the vaudeville circuit that used the name ‘Fannie,’ so he suggested it. ‘Flagg’ came from a friend.
Flagg achieved decent success as an actor, making appearances on several game show panels. The most prominent was ‘Match Game.’ She also added her talents to Broadway productions such as ‘The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’ and movies like ‘Five Easy Pieces,’ Crazy in Alabama,’ and ‘Grease.’
Fannie was Mike Preston in two seasons of ‘The New Dick Van Dyke Show’ and Cassie Bowman in ‘Harper Valley PTA.’ That doesn’t even include her guest appearances on talk shows like ‘The Rosie O’Donnell Show,’ ‘The Merv Griffin Show,’ and ‘The Dick Cavett Show.’
Her acting career flourished in the 1970s. But the author’s publishing career was not far behind. She got her lucky break in the 1960s after Allen Funt (Creator of Candid Camera) discovered her in a New York nightclub.
Allen added her to his staff as a writer and performer. Later, she wrote a short story that won first place at the Santa Barbara Writer’s Conference. That short story built the foundation for ‘Coming Attractions,’ Fannie’s 1981 novel.
It was re-released in 1992 under the title the author initially wanted (Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man). The autobiographical book was a hit, dominating The New York Times bestseller list for over two months.
‘Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe’ had an even bigger impact, attracting critical and financial success. Fannie hasn’t stopped writing since those early days.
Fannie Flagg Awards
Fannie co-wrote a screenplay for ‘Fried Green Tomatoes,’ an adaptation of one of her books. She won the Scritpers Award as a result, along with receiving Academy Award and Writers Guild of American Screen Award nominations. She has also received a Grammy nomination.

Best Fannie Flagg Books
The author is dyslexic. Fannie is not afraid to admit that she still can’t spell. She persists because of her strong desire to tell stories. Fannie’s best books include:
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop: Evelyn Crouch had accompanied her husband on his trip to see his mother in a nursing home. But as always, the visit had nothing to offer her. Fortunately, the middle-aged empty nester discovered Mrs. Threadgoode, a charming gray-headed woman with a story to tell.
Vividly aware that her best days were behind her, Mrs. Threadgoode took Evelyn back to Whistle Stop, Alabama, during the Depression era, regaling the woman with intriguing tales about the people she met and the full lives they lived.
The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion: 1909 found Stanislaw on a journey to America, hoping to escape the Russians by planting roots in the land of opportunities.
Decades later, in 1941, the War has taken all the men, forcing Fritzi and her sisters to step out of the shadows, filling the gap the men left. Before long, they will go from driving trucks and fixing flats to flying planes.
Meanwhile, in 2005 in Alabama, Mrs. Sookie Earle is about to receive a package that will change her world.
