The author had a varied career. While her resume may mention her work as a preschool director or an agent of the Head Start program, which sent her to help sweatshop workers in San Francisco’s Chinatown, it may ignore her stint as a barista in a Swiss train station cafe. She also taught English in Japan.

After adding several installments to the Paris-set Aimee Leduc series, Black’s obsession with the French is difficult to ignore. In fact, many readers praise her books for their riveting descriptions of life in Paris.

Some people consume her work because they’ve never visited Paris, and the Aimee Leduc books are a great alternative. Others have journeyed to Paris and toured all the places that appear in the novels in an attempt to recreate Aimee’s adventures.

Cara Black would like to blame her Francophile family for sparking her interest in all things French. But she can’t ignore the influence of her Catholic High School’s French-speaking nuns or the French literature she read during those early years.

The author remembers writing a letter to Romain Gary and receiving a response that pushed her to finally visit Paris. That trip was the first of many. Every trip to the city teaches the author something new.

She discovers secret histories previously unknown to her, hidden areas that even Parisians are unaware of, aspects of the city’s traditions begging for further exploration, and more. Where possible, the author will indulge in the same activities as her protagonist, such as slinking through sewers with rats and posing as a journalist to sneak into locations that would typically repel her.

Black believes that curiosity is every writer’s strongest trait. It compels you to ask questions other people typically ignore and to look for answers to seemingly impossible puzzles. That same curiosity drives Black to try new things, which, in turn, inspires the adventures her protagonists undertake.

Most mystery authors prefer to outline. They want to map out the story intricately before settling down to write the manuscript. And Black wishes she could outline. But she doesn’t possess that particular muscle.

So instead, she writes by the seat of her pants. She waits for inspiration to drive her. While the author enjoys the discovery process, she admits that writing aimlessly is tedious. She must cycle through multiple drafts before carving out a manuscript worth publishing.

Fortunately, she enjoys the research process. Where possible, she will consult experts in the fields that pique her interest. That includes retired detectives in Paris. Once she serves them oysters and red wine during long lunches, they are more than happy to tell her everything she needs to know.

Cara Black Awards

Black’s awards include the Medaille de la Ville de Paris and several Anthony and Macavity Award nominations.

Best Cara Black Books

The author is generous with her time and resources. She takes every opportunity that comes her way to help aspiring writers succeed. Black’s best books include:

Three Hours In Paris: Kate Rees was ill-prepared for the task ahead. The country girl had no formal spy training. British intelligence had armed her with a rifle and unleashed her, hoping she would save the world by killing the Fuhrer during his visit to Paris in 1940.

But the odds did not scare Kate. After losing her husband and infant daughter to a Luftwaffe bombing, she would give life and limb to get her vengeance. It wasn’t until she missed her mark that Kate began to question the true nature of the operation.

Murder in Belleville: Aimee Leduc dismissed Anais de Froissart when the politician’s wife first contacted her. She was tempted to indulge her best friend’s sister but ultimately rejected the request. She assumed that Anais wanted her to investigate her philandering husband.

But the task was a waste of Aimee’s skills, and she was ready to turn Anais away. But the woman was insistent. Additionally, she was scared. Intrigued, Aimee leaped into action. Any questions she had about the severity of the situation went out the window when a car exploded, injuring Anais and claiming the life of her husband’s mistress.

Now, Aimee must identify the person responsible for the attack on Anais before it’s too late.
