Weber knew from an early age that he wanted to run his own business. He attended Virginia State University to secure the skills he needed, graduating with an accounting and business management degree.
Later on, he got his MBA from the University of Virginia. The Certified Public Accountant eventually secured a position at a prestigious accounting firm. At the time, no one expected Weber to make such an explosive impact on publishing.
The author blames his time at Riker’s Island Prison for kickstarting his career. Weber was a business teacher at the prison. His life took an unexpected turn when the author asked his students to create a business plan for a bookstore.
Rather than sitting back and watching his students work, Weber decided to put his own plan for a bookstore into action. The result was a mail-order African American Bookstore with a physical location in Queens.
As the business thrived, the author noticed a gap in the market. His customers wanted to immerse themselves in pure, unadulterated drama but couldn’t find books that scratched their itch.
Even before these complaints arose, the thought of writing fiction had crossed Weber’s mind. He knew he could write better stories than those he saw on the shelves of his store. The author’s interactions with customers told him what people wanted to read.
Once he finally sat down to write, the author was armed with every tool he needed to succeed. His crazy imagination was merely a bonus. It allowed him to concoct scintillating tales brimming with lies, sex, and treachery, everything his customers were begging for.
Weber’s first novel (Looking for Luv) was a hit because no one saw it coming. Audiences were accustomed to romance novels told from the woman’s perspective. The author turned this concept on its head by exploring his love story from the man’s point of view.
The tactic was designed to attract male consumers, and it succeeded. Surprisingly, Weber struggled with English in school. He learned to write by reading novels. As a struggling artist, the author had thick skin.
He knew how to receive and utilize criticism. This allowed him to hone his skills despite his weaknesses. The author works with other professionals to polish his work. The compelling dialog people associate with his books comes from the conversations he overhears when people visit his bookstore.
On the business front, the author has a publishing house responsible for adding thousands of titles to the market. Weber has described the writers under his publishing house as a family. He expects them to stay true to their visions, so he gives them the freedom to adopt or reject his suggestions.
Where his audience is concerned, Weber’s books appeal to middle-class people. Their geographical location doesn’t matter.
