Jo Spain is an Irish author that writes mystery novels. The author has an overactive imagination, which is why she checks every door, window, and wardrobe before going to sleep. She will also peek under the bed just to be on the safe side.

Even as a child, she couldn’t stop imagining the worst-case scenarios in every situation. Fortunately, she became a novelist because that particular skill comes in handy when she concocts mysteries and murders.

She credits the Richard and Judy ‘Search for A Bestseller Competition’ from 2015 for kickstarting her career. The author read voraciously as a child, which was unusual because she grew up in a working-class area (Belcamp, Coolock).

She consumed everything her home had to offer before moving on to her school and then the local library. Eventually, she began producing simple stories. But the notion of writing fiction seriously never crossed her mind.

At the time, publishing sounded like an impossible goal, no different from pursuing rocket science. So she turned her attention to more tangible objectives, such as finishing her education. College was a challenging undertaking.

She had good teachers that supported her whenever the need arose. But Jo was working two jobs to make ends meet. Juggling her responsibilities was easier said than done. Nonetheless, she couldn’t get the desire to write out of her system.

Later, Jo landed a job in the Irish Parliament that forced her to write constantly. But the speeches, bills, and legislations she penned did not satisfy her. This became clear when she returned to work after giving birth.

Jo remembers realizing that she spent every hour of her day writing, but it was not her dream job. After reading and watching crime fiction from an early age, she finally decided to give the genre a serious go by crafting her own crime fiction stories.

Like college, that initial stage of her career was grueling. Jo worked twelve-hour days. Additionally, she had two babies to raise. And yet, she still found the time to write at night. It was a gamble because no one had commissioned the book.

The author was not delusional. She was convinced that every publisher she approached would reject her manuscript. But she had already decided to write more books despite the rejections, if only to hone her craft.

Even though she had a somewhat pessimistic outlook on her publishing future, that mindset allowed her to persevere even though no one would have faulted her for giving up in light of her busy schedule.

She couldn’t believe her luck when the Richard and Judy contest shortlisted her, landing the author a publishing deal on her first try.

Although it wasn’t long before she discovered the harsh realities of publishing. Jo encourages aspiring writers to lower their expectations. Even though she was writing a successful series, the author was not making enough money to survive without her day job.

When she left the job to write full-time, she had four kids at home and an unemployed husband, which made her decision a severe risk. But everything worked out in the end.
