Kate Mosse is a British bestseller and broadcaster that writes historical, mystery, supernatural, gothic, and nonfiction books. Born in 1961 in Chichester, West Sussex, Moose comes from a family of three sisters, of which she’s the oldest.

The author attended Chichester High School for Girls and New College, Oxford (BA in English). She’s the daughter of a solicitor and a part-time teacher (Business Studies and Economics). Money was rarely a topic of conversation in their home.

While they did not necessarily count every penny they spent, the family did not waste money either. Her parents were part of a wartime generation that cared little for keeping up appearances.

They did their best at work and used their free time to volunteer. Mosse adopted these lessons. She pushed herself at school, but her ambitious streak did not originate from a desire to make money. This became obvious when she decided to pursue publishing because most authors write for the love of storytelling, not to become rich.

Mosse started working at an early age. She remembers landing a waitressing gig (in an old-fashioned Chichester tea room) that occupied her Saturdays. But her clumsiness made her ill-suited for the job.

Her time at a Chichester Festival Theater (Usherette) was more pleasant. The author joined Hodder and Stoughton as a temp after her graduation from Oxford University. She became a permanent fixture after a staff member went on maternity leave.

Initially, the £6000 they offered her each year felt like a fortune. But then her rent and travel expenses disabused her of that notion. She stuck around long enough to move up the ranks. Mosse welcomed the challenge that came with being a woman in a gentleman’s club.

When her editor jumped to a different publisher, Mosse followed him. By the time she left publishing, her superiors wanted to give her oversight over several imprints. But the author wanted to write fiction.

Her decision was a gamble because she had a family, and they had a mortgage to pay. But Mosse was optimistic because she had just received her first book contract. She blames a friend for pushing her to write.

The author was pregnant with her second child when the friend (a literary agent) noticed that Mosse constantly complained about the absence of worthwhile pregnancy-related books. He told her to write the book she wanted to read instead of moaning so much about the issue, and Mosse agreed.

That same agent got Mosse a contract with Virago. Later, she wrote a book for a BBC TV series that caught the eye of an editor from a different publisher who commissioned two novels from her. While her advance was small, the author’s freelance journalism gigs kept her afloat until she became the Chichester Festival Theater’s executive director in 1998, dramatically improving the family’s financial situation.
