Katie MacAlister is an American author who writes various forms of romance and mystery. She tends to gravitate toward the paranormal aspects of her favorite genres, which is why vampires, ghosts, and dragons feature prominently in her stories.

Storytelling was not a passion for MacAlister when she was growing up. The author was an avid reader. However, it never occurred to her to write fiction, although she has noticed that the best writers are also voracious readers.

Initially, MacAlister spent her days reviewing and beta-testing software. Writing was not part of her daily routine until a publisher asked the author to write a book about her field. Surprisingly, the thought of putting words on paper excited her, so she acquiesced.

The software books she eventually wrote bored her to tears. She couldn’t experiment with any of the things that drew her to a great romance novel, such as the witty dialog and the humor, which is why she sat down and plotted a novel as soon as she finished the first software book.

The experience was invigorating. She enjoyed the process of creating quirky characters and throwing them into wacky situations. So she shifted gears, abandoned non-fiction, and threw herself headlong into fiction.

World-building is her favorite part of writing. She gets a kick out of researching foreign cultures and myths and using them to create fictional realms with distinct rules. The hardest aspect is the plotting.

MacAlister cannot write unless she outlines the plot. However, plotting a book means sitting at her desk and looking out the window for hours while her brain constructs a story. The process is painful and slow.

The first draft is also challenging. However, things become easier when she transitions to editing. Polishing and refining are less stressful than putting new ideas on paper for the first time. Editing only becomes a challenge when it comes to moving the edits on the physical manuscript to the Word file.

The process is tedious. Sometimes, MacAlister leaves and does other things because she can’t keep her eyes open. Because she’s a morning person, the author gets to her computer at around 8 am.

She writes for four hours before jumping to her promotional work, which includes talking to readers on social media and making videos. The author is highly productive because she treats writing like a job.

She injects eight to ten hours of her day into her career. Even when she procrastinates, MacAlister won’t let the day pass until she has ticked all the essential boxes. Fortunately, she has plenty of help.

The house cleaners, handymen, and assistants keep the distractions away, allowing the author to concentrate on her manuscripts. She takes great pleasure in hearing from readers who enjoy her books.
