Brenda Novak is a bestselling author that writes romance. Born in 1964 in Vernal, Utah, USA, she attended Brigham Young University. At the age of 20, she was studying business when she decided to abandon her scholarship to start a family.

For a time, she made her living from commercial real estate. Novak also worked as a loan officer. Because her children were still young, she had to leave them in the hands of a daycare provider.

When she realized, later on, that the daycare provider in question was using cough syrup and Tylenol to put her children to sleep, Novak was furious. Even more disturbing was the fact that the daycare provider was using this tactic so she could watch TV.

The author was wracked with guilt because she had left her children in the care of the wrong person when they were still so vulnerable. She decided that she would stay home and look after them. But she was still determined to contribute to her home’s financial situation.

At the time, the internet was still in its infancy. As such, Novak did not have much in the way of opportunities that would allow her to work from home. She was reading ‘A Knight in Shining Armor’ by Jude Deveraux when she started wondering whether she could write stories similar to the ones Jude had penned.

Novak did not have any formal training as a creative writer. It took her five years to hone her craft. She learned to tell stories by reading books. This is why she encourages aspiring authors to read.

‘Of Noble Birth’ was the first book she sold. But it wasn’t the last. Interestingly enough, the title for ‘Of Nobel Birth’ was the first thing that came to her. It jumped into her brain one random day.

As she considered the words, she realized that she wanted to tell a story that would explore the root of nobility. This compelled the author to give her book a historical setting because the caste system that was so rife centuries ago would allow her to create interesting emotional conflict.

Once that first novel was done, Novak realized that she couldn’t rely on random coincidences to inspire her. She started training her imagination, giving it additional depth so that it would respond to her call with captivating characters, plots, and settings whenever the need arose.

Novak’s imagination has never disappointed her. She believes that it has adapted to the demands of her career. It looks at everything she encounters, not just the major events she witnesses but the conversations she overhears and the articles she reads. It takes all the seemingly irrelevant aspects of the author’s daily life and distills them into surprisingly engaging ideas for novels. A wife and mother of five children, Novak doesn’t believe in writer’s block. To the author, any obstacles she encounters are a sign that she went wrong somewhere.

She can always overcome those obstacles by taking a step back and looking for the mistake that derailed her story.
