Lauren describes herself as a nerd, the kind that wears a lab coat and goggles. She has a Ph.D. in neuroscience. Before writing and publishing took over her life, she spent her days doing research.
Books were always an essential part of her existence. Lauren’s parents read to her when she was little. Eventually, she picked up the habit. The author still remembers reading and finishing Judy Blume’s ‘Freckle Juice’ in a day, an achievement that filled her with immense pride.
Once writing came into her life, she started filling journals with stories. The stories were terrible, but she enjoyed the process of writing them. The author doesn’t mind the jobs she did before finding her footing in publishing. Even when they challenged her, Lauren thought they were good for her.
The only exception was a sandwich shop that employed the author during her college years. She wasn’t fond of the job because it showed her what happened behind the scenes in restaurants, a revelation she did not appreciate.
While Lauren was putting her P.h.D. to good use, Christina was doing her part in a junior high counseling office. Like Lauren, Christina’s parents read to her when she was young, paving the way for her obsession with the written word.
Lauren and Christina met online. While writing fanfiction, they became close friends and decided to write novels together. Their first manuscript, a paranormal YA novel, never saw the light of day.
The pair’s big break came when they wrote the first of the ‘Beautiful Bastard’ books. Interestingly enough, the book began as online fiction. They did not expect the manuscript to spawn a successful series.
Initially, their books featured dual POVs. They gave each protagonist a point of view. The story would shift back and forth between the POVs. Lauren and Christina would split the work, with each author writing one of the protagonists.
Later on, they experimented with stories that had a single point of view. Even though they live in different areas, they find time to meet and brainstorm new ideas. Their collaborative efforts are hassle-free because their personalities gel.
Lauren and Christina are very different, yet they work well together. Their relationship is the foundation of their careers as authors. If they stopped writing fiction together, they would remain best friends.
The notion of writing romance novels with Christina appealed to Lauren because she felt safe. Lauren was not afraid to expose her words to her best friend, giving them both permission to make mistakes as they fumbled through the writing and editing process.
Lauren and Christina trust each other because they work for each other’s success.
