D. K. Holmberg is an American author that writes traditional, Urban, and Young Adult Fantasy. Holmberg’s childhood was a little messy. Novels were a welcome distraction. Back then, Holmberg was drawn to the works of authors like Stephen King and Tom Clancy.

His sister changed everything when she gave him Robert Jordan‘s Wheel of Time. Holmberg was in high school at the time. Not only did he fall in love with Jordan’s work but it ignited his love for fantasy.

A husband and father, Holmberg started in healthcare. The people that read his novels can point to some of the field’s influences in his work. Writing did not come easy to the author, not in the beginning.

When he was first starting out, it was a struggle for Holmberg to find the time to pen his stories. His goal at the time was to write five hundred words every single day. It wasn’t enough for him to achieve this goal every so often.

Holmberg wanted to write consistently. This was easier than done, though. Not only did he have a full-time job but he did not always feel like writing. Eventually, the author found a routine that favored his creative process. This encouraged him to increase his goal to a thousand words.

A time came when Holmberg decided to leave his job behind. He did not make this decision easily. The author had a family to support. It wasn’t enough for him to get by. He had to succeed as an author. Otherwise, his family would pay the price.

Because of the consequences of failure, Holmberg decided to approach his writing like a real business. He created a schedule that he has refined in the years since he started. Holmberg begins writing at 8. Once his children leave for school, he sits down and makes every effort possible to reach his word count. Revisions are done in the afternoons. Like any business, the author works between Monday and Friday, 8 to 5 PM.

He uses the weekend to relax. Even though he enjoys what he does, Holmberg isn’t a fan of the revision process. He wants to create new ideas. He spends a lot of time dreaming up new worlds. In fact, for the most part, Holmberg prefers to categorize his stories according to the worlds they inhabit rather than the series that each collection of novels constitutes.

All his series are designed to stand on their own. Some novels share worlds. Some characters have appeared in multiple series. However, each series can be enjoyed alone, without prior knowledge of the series that came before or after.

While he always looks for opportunities to create new worlds, Holmberg is sometimes tempted to revisit old worlds, especially if his readers are clamoring for them. The author writes stories that fit several genres, not just traditional fantasy but urban and YA fantasy.

He wrote his first novel with his children in mind, which is why it appeals to both children and adults. While he doesn’t include horror in his work, some of Holmberg’s novels are darker and more mature than others.
