Elizabeth Lowell is an American author that writes romance novels. Ann Maxwell, the person behind the Elizabeth Lowell pseudonym, was born in 1944 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The people who only knew Lowell during her childhood might be surprised to learn that she writes romance. Her reading habits were restricted to classic literature.

She discovered science fiction in college after reading her first science fiction novel. In the years that followed, the author slowly expanded her interests, exposing her brain to different genres.

Like so many authors, Lowell started writing fiction out of boredom. A former student at the University of California (Riverside), where she got her English literature BA, Lowell was married to Evan Maxwell.

Evan’s schedule was inconvenient because he worked from 4 in the afternoon to midnight. Lowell spent those hours at home alone with their young son.

Television did not interest her, and after reading every science fiction book the local library and second-hand book store had to offer, she sat down at her desk and started writing a book on her manual typewriter.

Once she finished it, the author submitted the manuscript and then spent the next few months accumulating rejection letters from traditional publishers. But eventually, she sold her first novel, igniting a publishing career that has spanned decades.

The author did not restrict herself to science fiction. She joined forces with her husband to write several bestselling novels. Determined to avoid unnecessary arguments, the couple created a system that started with Evan selecting the setting of each story and writing the first draft.

The pair would work together to iron out the details of the plot and characters. It would then fall to Lowell to write the second draft. She could change whatever she wanted, especially where the pacing and dialog were concerned.
Her foray into romance can be blamed on the advent of the word processor. Lowell was a successful science fiction author when the word processor came along.

Once she added the tool to her arsenal, Lowell’s productivity tripled. Determined to experiment with new genres, she started brainstorming with her agent.

The author read horror fiction and rejected the genre. Then her husband bought Lowell the first romance novels she had ever read. Of the books Evan bought, ‘Corporate Affair’ by Stephanie James was the only novel that won her over.

Having decided to write romance, she bought several dozen novels to familiarize herself with the genre before finally introducing the ‘Elizabeth Lowell’ pen name and using it to publish romance.

In the years that followed, she added historical romance and contemporary romantic suspense to the equation.
