F. Paul Wilson is a bestseller that writes everything from thrillers and mysteries to science fiction and fantasy. Born in 1946, Wilson loved stories as a child. He consumed them wherever he could find them. That included reading Helein and Lovecraft, listening to Alan Freed (Radio), and watching horror movies.

A graduate of Georgetown University, Wilson knew from an early age that he was different. He wasn’t the only person his age that loved monsters and rocket ships. But the author could already tell that his passion for the fantastical was stronger.

He remembers walking into comic book shops and losing his mind over the amazing covers he saw. When ‘The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms’ debuted, the author made it his life’s mission to watch it.

When he dipped his toes into publishing, Wilson was tempted to pursue horror. He loves the genre because it places characters and their emotions at the center. Literary horror succeeds by showing readers the reactions of the protagonists.

But Wilson chose to prioritize science fiction because the market for horror was practically nonexistent outside of small magazines. Fortunately, the public liked science fiction, and his love for the genre was just as strong.

Initially, the notion of writing a full-length novel did not appeal to Wilson. Or rather, he had neither the patience nor the strength to write one. At that time, novels were roughly 60,000 words. But that was too long for the author.

He had spent his life writing 5000-word short stories. 60,000-word manuscripts were too much for him to tackle. Some people think the author overcame that mindset when he wrote ‘Healer,’ his first novel.

But in truth, ‘Healer’ was a series of novelettes strung together as opposed to one long cohesive manuscript. ‘Wheels Within Wheels’ was the same, a combination of short stories. ‘An Enemy of the State’ was the first true novel Wilson wrote.

It marked his transition from a short story writer to a full-blown novelist. Wilson credits John W. Campbell Jr. for giving the author his big break. He kept submitting short fiction and receiving rejection slips from editors.

The submission he made to ‘Analog’ was different. Like all the other publications, ‘Analog’ rejected Wilson’s story. However, Campbell took things a step further and explained why he had rejected the story. Additionally, he told the author to make another submission.

Wilson did just that. Campbell rejected it as well. But again, he explained the rejection. This continued until the author submitted a story that ticked all of Campbell’s boxes. Wilson has described his interactions with Campbell as an unofficial writing course.
