Hannah Howell is an American author that writes historical and paranormal romance. Born in 1950 in Massachusetts, the bestseller can trace her ancestry to original American colonists. Howell, who met her husband during a trip to England, began her career by writing English, American, and Scottish historicals.

However, she eventually leaned into the Scottish historicals because she loved their overwhelming potential for future stories. Her characters are families that endure for generations. Howell can’t escape Scotland’s influence over her career because she appreciates the country’s long history, the tribal lifestyle its residents pursue, and the strong sense of family that persists within the various clans.

Her readers agree. They can’t get enough of the historical eras and settings the author explores. Interestingly, Howell doesn’t spend as much time in England and Scotland as people think.

She has in-laws in England, which explains the occasional visits. The family would spend three weeks in England every two years when her sons were young. But she hasn’t seen nearly as much of Scotland as she would like.

When the opportunity to visit the country arises, she favors the Highlands because of their scenery. Howell’s publishing journey was somewhat unconventional, at least in comparison to her peers in the field.

She took up her pen in 1983 when an article revealed the considerable market share the romance genre enjoyed. She wrote and sold a medieval and a Western romance in 1988.

But she couldn’t rid herself of the Scotsmen that continually appeared in her stories or her love for their history. So she leaned into the sub-genre. Her journey fascinates her peers because Howell is not one of those authors that worked a regular full-time job before leaving it to pursue publishing.

In fact, Howell hasn’t done any significant work outside her home, at least not as an adult. She became a stay-at-home mother at the age of 21. The author credits her husband for adapting to her schedule.

He tries to make do with the leftovers from the three meals his wife makes every week. Additionally, he does enough housework to keep their home tidy. Howell encourages aspiring writers to find an equally reliable support system.

It takes her six months to complete a manuscript. She starts with the characters before moving on to the plot. She spends a lot of time thinking about the story and scribbling ideas for plot threads and scenes before finally sitting down to write.

She knows it would be easier to type the manuscript directly on a computer. But Howell prefers to write each book the old fashion way. And then, she edits it while typing on the computer. The author doesn’t write in the morning.

She’s not productive during those initial hours of the day. Otherwise, Howell doesn’t follow a particular writing schedule. She does her best to write in the afternoon after drinking a few lattes. If she can’t find the words to write, Howell will get the creative juices flowing by watching her favorite movies.
