The author was too young to read Stephen King’s work. But that did not stop her from raiding her father’s bookshelf. Jackson’s interests were not restricted to King’s books. She also read Harry Potter, The Edge Chronicles, and other age-appropriate books.
However, crime fiction and thrillers were her primary passion. Jackson eventually enrolled at the University of Nottingham, graduating with a first-class degree and a master’s.
Because she was already determined to write fiction for a living, Jackson fought the urge to find a proper job. Instead, she landed part-time work in retail because it allowed her to write.
She was still in retail when the idea for ‘A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder’ came to her. The book was a gamble because it consumed so much of her time, which she could have used to find a real job. But the gamble paid off when her debut novel received British Book Awards recognition. It was also optioned for a potential move and TV adaptation, paving the way for the author’s success as a published writer.
Jackson is obsessed with true crime podcasts. They inspired her debut series. Her phone is filled to the brim with these podcasts. Some of them focus on a single murder. Others explore a new case in each episode.
Jackson loves the format of the amateur investigations at the heart of these true crime podcasts. She wanted to replicate the format in her novels. Her objective was to present the murder mysteries in a manner that felt accessible for readers. Based on the feedback she has received from her fans, Jackson succeeded.
Like most established authors, Jackson expects aspiring writers to read as much as possible. However, unlike her peers, Jackson doesn’t want these amateurs to limit themselves to literature.
She believes that movies and tv shows can have as powerful an impact on the minds of storytellers as any book. This applies to narrative games and screenplays.
Additionally, she doesn’t agree with people who think that you have to write every single day. Jackson doesn’t write every day. From what she has seen, the author has more days in a year when she does not write than days when she writes.
However, when she isn’t writing, Jackson performs the business tasks associated with her publishing career. She doesn’t waste the free moments afforded to her during the year. In that regard, she expects aspiring authors to dedicate themselves to their publishing dreams.
Holly Jackson Awards
Jackson won the YA Book Prize in 2020.
Best Holly Jackson Books
The author believes that ample sleep is crucial to the success of aspiring writers. She tries to secure roughly 9 hours of sleep a night when she’s writing a book. Jackson’s best novels include:
A Girl’s Guide To Murder: Is Sal Singh guilty? Andie Bell died five years ago, and the town is convinced that Sal committed the crime. The police are just as certain of his guilt. Pippa is the only person in Sal’s corner.
Because she grew up in the town, Pippa knows the case well. She decided to make it the topic of her project at school, and once she commenced her investigation, Pippa uncovered secrets that someone was determined to hide at all costs, even if it meant committing murder.
Good Girl, Bad Blood: Pip’s investigation was a success. With Ravi Singh’s help, she had solved the murder of Andie Bell. In the process, she had turned her true-crime podcast into a hit.
However, despite the attention, Pip was done. She had no interest in investigating additional crimes and cases. But then Jamie Reynolds disappeared, and Pip was forced to go back on her word.
She knew Jamie. The fact that he had disappeared on the anniversary of Andie Bell and Sal Singh’s deaths was suspicious. The police had no interest in helping. This left Pip with no other choice but to intervene. But finding Jamie Reynolds meant bringing the town’s secrets to light and attracting the attention of the wrong people.
