Julie James is a successful American author who writes romance novels. She went to Law School and clerked at the US Court of Appeals before joining one of the country’s largest Law firms. It kept her busy for several years.

But then she dipped her toes into script writing and quickly realized that storytelling was her primary passion. So, she left the law to write full-time. Surprisingly, the Amazon bestseller had her sights set on the FBI.

Law enforcement has always intrigued her, partly because of family members like her grandfather, a police Captain before his retirement, and Julie’s husband, whose father was a former police officer in Chicago.

In fact, she graduated college and went to Law School with the intention of eventually veering into the FBI. However, an FBI recruiter dashed the author’s dreams during her first semester when he revealed that Julie would never pass the vision test.

This left her with no other choice but to become a real lawyer. You won’t find her complaining. It took the author a while to realize that she was too much of a scaredy cat to succeed as a Special Agent. Additionally, Julie found that she actually enjoyed practicing law.

It took her over a year to make that life-altering decision to leave the law for publishing. At the time, she had written two manuscripts. When producers optioned them, Julie realized she could turn publishing into a career if she wrote full-time. The author knew she would regret it in the long run if she allowed the uncertainty to prevent her from pursuing her writing dreams.

Her first book was a screenplay titled ‘The Andrews Project.’ A producer optioned the script, but the movie was never made. When the option expired, Julie’s film agent encouraged her to turn the script into a book, and the author acquiesced.

The film agent in question liked the manuscript so much that he submitted it to a literary agent who secured the author a deal with Berkley.

Julie doesn’t approach her books the same way she would a screenplay because screenplays are locked into a specific format. That said, when the author plots a book, she starts by playing it in her head like a movie.

The dialog is pivotal to her success. Audiences have praised Julie for the hilarious banter and sarcastic exchanges between her characters. They’ve also praised her for the insight she shows while writing from a male POV.

People think she grew up in a house with many male siblings, which is not true. She doesn’t have brothers. However, she can rely on her guy friends and husband to tell her how they would react in the situations she creates in her books.
