1 | Gary Phillips' Hollis P.I. | 2014 | Description / Buy |
She remembers raiding the orchards in the area on her way to and from kindergarten. The orchards were disappearing by the time she left Middle School.
The author went to the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she pursued Latin American Studies. Blackwell was an artistic student whose creativity manifested in the books she read, paintings she produced, and languages she learned (French, Vietnamese, and Spanish).
The author traveled quite a bit, visiting Mexico, Europe, and Central America. At the State University of New York at Albany, she studied Anthropology. Blackwell wrote several articles during this period. She nurtured a fascination with traditions and religions from other cultures.
Her interests took her to countries like Italy, France, and Cuba. She worked with the BBC on a production in the Philippines, joined an elementary school as a social worker, and even learned to faux finish walls.
The birth of her son did not slow the author down. Rather than finishing her Cultural Anthropology dissertation, she decided to paint murals and portraits in California.
By the time she started writing fiction, Blackwell had a wealth of experiences to draw from. She used the pen name ‘Hailey Lind’ to write the Art Lover’s Mystery series in collaboration with her sister.
The Witchcraft Mystery series followed soon after, permitting Blackwell to indulge her interest in the occult. The author cannot decide whether she prefers to write alone or with her sister. Both options have pros and cons.
Blackwell enjoys the process of collaborating with her sister because they have the same sense of humor. However, working with a partner forces the pair to perform several rewrites because their stories must have the same voice.
Additionally, the author doesn’t have the option of going off on interesting tangents. She has to consult her sister on major plot-related decisions. Nonetheless, you won’t find her complaining.
For Blackwell, the characters in her stories come very easily to her. She enjoys crafting them from scratch and imagining what they would do in different situations. Eventually, the author’s protagonists become so tangible in her imagination that she can trust them to develop and advance the story organically.
The author has to outline her stories before writing them because she has to submit the outlines to her editor. But she doesn’t mind because the outlines force her to rethink her plots and storylines. However, Blackwell can also write organically. In fact, she wants her stories to surprise her while she’s writing them.
Juliet Blackwell Awards
Blackwell has received an Agatha Award nomination.
Best Juliet Blackwell Books
Even with a successful publishing career, the author finds the time to paint and garden. Blackwell’s best books include:
Secondhand Spirits: Lily couldn’t wait to open Aunt Cora’s closet. The witch was determined to live a normal life. However, that did not stop her from using her gifts to make her store a huge hit.
Lily’s life was getting better with each passing day. But then a client died, and Lily’s fortunes nosedived. The witch was determined to solve the mystery, especially when she realized that children had started to disappear. But Aidan and Max kept getting in her way.
A Cast-Off Coven: The San Francisco School of Fine Arts wanted Lily’s help. They wanted her to identify signs of paranormal activity. In return, they offered her a trunk of vintage clothes they had discovered in a closet.
Lily was more than happy to lend a hand. However, she did not expect to find a dead body when she took the job. The victim was one of the school’s wealthy patrons.
It was up to Lily to find the person that had killed him. But she had a lot on her plate, not just Max, her boyfriend and a myth-buster who hadn’t come to terms with her witchcraft, but the Victorian-era clothes the school had given to her.
She could sense something odd from the clothes. Anyone else would have dismissed it as the scent of mothballs. But Lily knew the smell of evil. It was unmistakable.
